Paying a high price for items made in China

^^^Yeah its been pretty obvious lately that something has been going on with Chanel and now we know what it is. So Chanel has had steady price increases but has found a way to outsource under the table. What is the point of the price increases if its not going to have any bearings on the manufacturing...

Depressing is an understatement especially for a brand like Chanel.

If brands increase their prices, it's to show the world they are successful and that ladies are so much in love with them that they won't mind paying hundreds od dollars to get the bag of their dreams....which is supposed to be of exceptional quality....:rolleyes:

Thank you.

Of course, Limom, it was Envoyé Spécial of Thursday December 20th, Channel: France 2.
Tell me if you have been able to watch it...
TV5 Monde sometimes rebroadcast it...
Or you can watch it on the Internet by googling the name of the programme and the date if you live abroad....

Bonsoir.

well, this very reveling program has been "geobloque"
it is not available on line for now but I hope it will be in the future.
what a shame!
What a shame, Limom!
I hope you will be able to see it in the near future...
One of the solutions, now, would be to have a look at TV5 Monde programmes...I am pretty certain they will rebroadcast the programme as they usually do...

Unfortunately, my cable package no longer include French TV.
However, someone might download the program in other online medias.
I'll keep an eye open for it.:smile1:
The comments are pretty enlightening.:smile1:

I don't understand why people place the made in xxxxxxxxxwhereverxxxxxxxx into consideration,

that's not what I look at when I purchase.

I look at the design, quality of material and the way it's put together, I'm very big on the little details as well as overall look..

then I look at the price and ask myself if what I see is worth the price. there are some things I'd never pay for no matter how cheap, because I can't stand poorly executed clothes/bags/shoes.

people often comment on my stuff, whether it's a jacket I brought at anthropologie three years ago or this cute coach bag I've gotten two years ago or a yohji piece that I brought four years ago..

all look still relatively brand new despite multiple wears
Maybe you should take it into consideration. We don't know what we're really buying.

Here's just one example -- Anyone remember the outrage at discovering coats made in China did not have "faux fur” but were made from dog fur? Clothing we could easily purchase at Macy’s, J.C. Penney and Nordies. Labels such as Sean John, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein.

Everyone said they had no idea-- well if the retailers and manufacturers had no idea, who does? :shrugs:

Edited to add- don't forget all those children's toys coated with lead paint.... made at a factory in China. (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/19/business/worldbusiness/19toys.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0)

Everything is made in China though, don't know how we can get around it.

^dog fur?? ... *eyeing my Siberian raccoon fur hoodie suspiciously*

Seriously tho, I buy what I like by gauging the quality of the material and workmanship. I don't think skilled workmen are limited to only France or USA or where ever. It irks me when people review a bag or accessories at Amazon or Zappos and it becomes a platform for their bias against all things made in China.

Just because it says Made In China does not necessarily mean the materials used were produced in China but may have been sent to China to be assembled. For instance, while my Frye leather tote bag says Made in China, right on the label it also says Genuine Italian leather. I have to believe that the leather is indeed of Italian origin and sent over to China to save on labor and overhead costs for the company.

One doesn't know where the materials come from vs. the labor unless one is able to check the company's import/export specs.

You didn't read about that? I should have included a link, it was all over the news. Here's just one:

Ask a Chinese lady if she is ready to buy a made in China Longchamp.....for example....

All those prestigious brands that have decided to cut costs....are sawing the branch on which they are sitting...

Haha! Love that analogy! Great image, there, and totally accurate!
I kind of agree with what people are saying about looking at the item, not fixating on where its made, but I'm also horrified by these things that come out every now and then. (Dog fur? Yikes.)

And there has to be a pretty much universal poor treatment of workers if its THAT much cheaper to actually ship nice materials somewhere else to have them made rather than pay your own country's fair wages. I hate that!
