Paying a high price for items made in China

As far as I'm concerned, as long as the item itself is of good quality, I couldn't care less about its country of origin. Sure, there are mass-production textile factories in China that may churn out products of poor quality, but some of the best products in the world also come from there. To make a statement regarding refusing to purchase a product simply because it was made in China is a gross over-generalization and only perpetuates negative stereotypes. I also find the double standard mentioned by lovemyangels interesting- I've never yet seen anyone complain about shoddy manufacturing in Apple products, and the vast majority of their products are made and assembled in Asia.

the problem with premium labels being made in China isnt the quality, but the price.
The company is skimping on their manufacturing and materials costs, yet they are still charging the high premium for the brand.

Yes, the cost is increasing for producing in China, but it is obviously still cheaper than the traditional Italy/France/insert developed western country; otherwise they wouldnt be producing in China.

I have the same problem with premium brands who have sent their manufacturing in eastern european countries also (.. miu miu, im looking at you).
I will not buy miu miu made in Turkey because they charge the consumer the same but they are producing in a much cheaper country. i feel ripped off.

(and yes, there is that whole other kettle of fish where the majority is made in a cheaper country then shipped off to the developed country for labelling but lets not get into tht here... that gets too tricky. we can only go buy off what we can see, which is the "made in..." tag)

I agree 100%!

+1. It just bothers me so much when they charge ridiculous prices when they are paying their workers such low wages.

Actually, there is a movement to bring computer manufacturing back in the US.
And I think it is a great idea in view of the subcontracting abuse oversea.
It has nothing to do with racism IMO.
I have no problem buying anything, anywhere BUT I refuse to be fooled on the provenance.
Why play the racism card? It is absurd and truly play on people's emotion.
And I won't be guilted in thinking that my insistence on transparency translates into racism.

Some people care about country of origin, some not. For those who care there is a problem - how to check where product was made BEFORE making purchase. There are websites with such informations, like XX, but - at least for the moment - there are no informations about bags or apparel (but recently some perfumes appeared there).

Yes.
I wrote here, because the topic of this thread is directly connected with site's subject. We don't sell anything, we don't promote any brand. The website has information purposes only.

I have just finished watching a programme about French premium brands, tonight....
And I am devastated....
Givenchy and Kenzo suits which sell between 1000 and 1500 euros used to be made in France....Then the factory closed , the qualified workers (ladies especially) were fired...and the brands went to Poland....When Poland became too expensive....they went to Bulgaria. They still are there...And at the moment they are thinking about going to Greece....
One French former employee said what we all say here " We have lost our jobs, now I drive an ambulance....but the suits prices have never gone down....."
Somebody explained that the making of a Givenchy suit is about 50 euros in Bulgaria...
Why does the suit cost more than 1000 euros, then?
Because it belongs to a famous premier brand....The margin profit is enormous...
The money goes to advertising, rental of boutiques in expensive areas......distributors etc....

Thanks for that info Mariapia.

Can you believe it SweetFire, I was so upset that I couldn't sleep at night...
They also talked about the famous LV factories in France......We know that LV has factories in Spain too and LV doesn't mind talking about it....but...they also have a big one in Rumania... which represents 10% of the making...and of course....the brand doesn't want to answer the journalists' questions on that particular subject....
As for Chanel, the bags are made in Italy in factories that work for other brands....Unknown to Chanel, an Italian maker....subcontracted the job to a clandestine workshop where an employee told the French journalist that he received the leather and then got 45 euros for the making of a bag ....
Chanel answered that they are going to investigate....
Pretty depressing!

^^^Yeah its been pretty obvious lately that something has been going on with Chanel and now we know what it is. So Chanel has had steady price increases but has found a way to outsource under the table. What is the point of the price increases if its not going to have any bearings on the manufacturing...

Depressing is an understatement especially for a brand like Chanel.
