What a great thread, Julide!
I had Barbara and George Bush on one of my flights in 1979. President Bush had just excepted the VP position. Mrs Bush had the
damn pearls on. LOL! She was absolutely delightful...her coloring is beautiful IRL. White hair and blue-blue eyes. She was reading
a racy Jackie Collins book and didn't want anyone to know.
Great story!!! Thanks for sharing.

Two cool historical pieces associated with former First Ladies (though not owned by either). The first is a 4+carat canary diamond, found in Crater of Diamonds State Park, Murfreesboro, Arkansas and worn by Hilary ******* to Bill *******'s gubernatorial an presidential inaugurations.

The second was commissioned from designer Kara Ross by the White House protocol office; the wood is made from a tree that fell at the White House, and the bracelets were given as a gift by Mrs. ***** to dignitaries and visiting heads of state.

Photos of the original Jackie Kennedy engagement ring are few and far between. This isn't great, but I think based on descriptions that it was more of a princess style, with tapered baguettes surrounding the emerald. She added the large square cut diamond and the marquise stones. I quite like the redesign, though. It's very pretty and unique. View attachment 3611560

I've seen the one at the top/above referenced as the original style, but these are not baguettes. it does look similar to the ring on her hand, though.

You are amazing! I had thought the original ring was a more simplistic version of the moi et toi theme. I never knew there wasn't a large diamond! I stand corrected as I like the remodel ring infinitely better that the original. Thank you again for finding the picture!

My grandma has something similar, with a matching bracelet. Nobody knows where it is, she is now 96 and has dimentia. So we will never know.:crybaby:

Thanks. I like the redesigned ring better too and think it fit Jackie's style better as well! Both were pretty nontraditional for the time, too.

A close up of Melania *****'s 12 carat D flawless Graff engagement ring; Donald was quoted at the time saying he got a 50% discount from Graff in exchange for the publicity; smart move on both their parts. Cost has been estimated at $1.5 million at the time.

Was he famous at the time of the wedding? Maybe I should go look for a quick bio on him...I wonder how many others have gotten a discount at graff for publicity...and how I wish there was a slight possibility of this at Hermes!!:giggle:

"The Art of the Deal"? He bought the ring in 2004...discount or not, can you imagine what's it's worth today?

Mary Todd Lincolns seed Pearl suite.

Great pic ... You may already know this, the Lincoln demi parure came from Tiffany and cost about $565 at the time (or around $12k in today's dollars), and her dress was $2000 - both fairly large sums for the day. Lincoln couldn't afford the entire parure (which I believe had brooches and earrings) but this is so pretty. Pearls were, as then, ultra fashionable.
