Ordering a bag Canada to US - normal to have to file SS#?

Hi! I ordered a bag from Canada, to be delivered to USA - is it normal for FedEx to call you from customs and required you to file a form with your SS# with them? Just want to make sure before I go sending out my SS#. Not a big fan of this! They want to keep it on file, too.

Some shippers will ask for a Social Security or Tax ID Number for the customs declaration.
