Oprah knows her opinion is HUGE, look at the people that hang on her every word, she has never publicly endorsed a xxxxxxxxxxxxxx, but she didn't. I think was a very racist thing on her part.
:confused1: I hate when the word racist or racism is misused; the media can be thanked for this. To be racist or perform an act of racism would mean not giving someone an equitable opportunity that you would afford someone else or ro*******ing advancement of said person based solely on their race. It's withholding a chance because you have the power to and you exercise that power on a select person.

In any event, calling Oprah racist who gave as many people the platform to become successful as she has is silly...Dr. Phil, Rachel Ray, Dr. Oz, Suze Orman, Dr. Laura, countless authors/entrepreneurs, etc. Chile please...those people would hardly be as successful without her.

"The store owner told the country's Blick newspaper there had been 'a misunderstanding' caused by the assistant’s failure to recognize Oprah but denied the snub was due to racism."

So the store owner thinks it's o.k. to treat customers this way if they are not famous.

Gross.

I doubt it because of what Babydoll Chanel just posted:

The store owner is making a lot of excuses for her employee.

Do you mean about the price?
NVM
I read the article and I see what you mean.
Shoot that lady is dumb.
I would have shown her, the bag, the wallet, the key chain....

Preach!

lmao.Just give it up lady. No one believes that explanation. Not even you. But I am just wondering. Is Oprah not a familiar face overseas?

As for O being racist. 50 cent must be laughing at that one.

No , she is not so familiar in Europe that everyone would have recognized her.

This shop owner is pathetic.
While I've heard similar stories from white people they were usually very young ( looking ) or had a very casual outfit.

I doubt an older white woman wearing the same outfit Oprah had would have been treated like this.

It's not rare that salesperson " decides" who can afford an item based on race , age or outfit.

There goes her job...

Oprah Winfrey reveals how 'racist' shop assistant refused to let her look at a handbag and told her it was 'too expensive' for her during Swiss vacation

  • Oprah Winfrey was in Zurich to attend Tina Turner's wedding when incident happened
  • TV star, worth $3billion, went to an exclusive Trois Pommes store during shopping trip

  • [*]Shop assistant told Winfrey 'you won't be able to afford' the bag
[*]Store's owner has apologised for behaviour of employee and blamed a 'misunderstanding'

I've often been treated the same way and I'm what is considered white. Many of those sales associates are very, very snotty.

I remember an associate who told me that they wouldn't have anything in the store for me. So, I pulled out a pimp roll (wad of cash) and asked if she had anything for me now? I left before she could respond. I was really hurt but I've grown up since then. Now, if I'm treated poorly I put my complaint in writing with dates and times.

Yes, this is ridiculous and as a student of political rhetoric, it really irks me.

We're all brought up (if we were raised the right way) not to judge by appearance, age, income etc. And when you see someone doing exactly that it's just outrageous. No one knows the circumstances in ones life unless one is told so by the person.

This has happened to me many times.
Depending on the circumstances, I speak to the employee directly.
Most of the time I keep it moving.
My husband who is Asian has salespeople bending over to help him.
C'est la vie.:smile1:

Winfrey didn't name the store, but it was later revealed to be a boutique for the fashion label 'Trois Pommes', in Zurich. Winfrey told Entertainment Tonight she wanted a closer look at a handbag selling for around 38,000 dollars, but the seller refused to take it off the shelf, telling Winfrey 'No, it's too expensive.'

“She refused to get it ... she said, ‘ I don’t want to hurt your feelings and I said, ‘Okay, thank you so much, you’re probably right I can’t afford it. Now why does she do that?”
Winfrey, who Forbes estimates earned $77 million in the 12 months between June 2012 and June 2013, said she left without making a scene over the “Jennifer” bag, rather than give the clerk a commission.
