Nails Magazine for April 2013 has something new from OPI GelColors - A MATTE TOPCOAT!! Can you tell I'm a bit excited by this?

Also a shade shifting top coat from OrlyGeLFX but it's only good on top of GEL FX colors.

To be honest, I've watched some of OPI Gelcolor's instructional videos on youtube, and they even mentioned in these old videos that to create a matte look you would just not use the top coat on your nails... so I don't see the appeal of a specifically matte top coat? (Although I know for OTHER brands, some gels are naturally a bit more shiny sans top coat, so this would be good for them). The only thing the top coat would prevent is the excess pigment from being wiped off your nails when creating a matte look the "old" way, right?

The Orly Gel FX thing looks neat, though... I'm just confused because they're a little unspecific with that word "Dark".

I've tried doing no topcoat and it doesn't wear well for me. I'm too hard on my nails I guess washing them or using hand sanitizer 100 tunes a day and then doing other people's nails there's not a bit if acetone resistance like I get with my Gelish topcoat. I've also tried buffing but both that and no topcoat every time you touch it with your fingers or touch your hair or something natural oils get on it and make it look splotchy. I'm hoping the OPI matte topcoat will remedy all that. Sadly RNP matte topcoat wears off pretty quick for me too so defeats the purpose. :-(

Ahhh ok, I work under similar conditions, but I've never tried the no top coat trick myself, so I didn't know it decreased the wear time.

I haven't had great experiences with RNP top coats on top of my gels, either.

That's not been my experience. No top coat doesn't produce a velvety matte, it just produces less shiny. And there's no durability either, lots of service breakdown. The way I had been taught to do matte was to complete with a topcoat and then buff, but I thought that was unsatisfactory as well. So I am looking forward to what I'm hoping will be a velvety, consistent, and durable matte topcoat. Still, I suspect it will be something I use rarely, but I think the nail art from it will be interesting.
