Once you buy H bags do you ever go back?

Hermes doesn't offer large and lightweight totes and weaved baskets (Kelly Picnic is too formal and I am not comfortable paying the price + prespend for a summer basket) so these are the two categories I get from other brands. I mostly get baskets from Loewe or local shops when travelling. Currently obsessing over Y tote by Saint Laurent so its probably going to be my spring purchase.
That’s so interesting. I rarely buy anything other than Hermes these days. When we are lucky enough to have these bags we should use them. :happydance:
However when I do buy something is usually one of those no name classic straw baskets from french markets.

I also love those French straw baskets & have one that was made by the Slatkin boys when they were in BG
lined in soft pink checkerboard silk & several others..

For me, Birkins and Kellys are way too commonplace where I live (real AND fake lol) and now that I have a collection of over 30 H bags alone (including limited editions and exotics) - I am actually...bored. I have moved on to collecting novelty bags only (the likes of Chanel minaudieres and I've even dabbled into LV's Murakami re-release though wouldn't consider that as "novelty" apart from the nomination-only and beautifully crafted Koro Koro Clutch which is my current obsession). What probably really did it for me was the over saturation of the bags EVERYWHERE and a need for something truly unique that defines my sense of style. I still love all of my bags but after thinking I'd carry nothing but Birkins and Kellys to my deathbed here I am now only seeking out "wearable art" and collector's items

I’ve mostly culled my Hermes collection in favor of bespoke.
Birkins and Kellys are far too recognizable right now. I have kept a two birkins, a HAC, and three Kelly’s along with a few non-Quota bags.

While Hermes bags are still the best made mass market luxury brand, the current craftsmanship is inconsistent, and overall not as good as bags made 10+ years ago.

Then there is the hoops you need to go through in order to purchase said bags. I decided that for me, I’d rather go through artisans Peter Nitz or Mila Jito, et al.

My new Mila Jito Dearling 26 does everything Kelly does and it’s so much easier to open and close. The design, craftsmanship and stitching are exquisite. It’s dark red Novonappa (barenia) with rose gold metallic chèvre interior. The only drawback is that production takes six to nine months.

So, there is life after Hermes.
I loved your Hermes bag collection, and your new Mila Jito is gorgeous! But, wow. The RING :D

I made this point before, but I want to emphasize it: H bags are heavy, so don’t be too quick to get rid of others lol

Congratulations.

6 - 9 months production in the knowledge you will get the exact bag you really want can be preferable to someone waiting perhaps more than a year to be offered 'any' bag at H.

Sounds like MJ operates more like Hermes did a lifetime ago, when a client and company collaborated to make that person a bag of/for a lifetime.

So long as there's a reliable, transparent process.

Having said that, it's also a matter of trust. With serious money changing hands, I have had serious issues with a few custom, MTO, M2M and bespoke services in the past (not just bags, all kinds go brands). Sometimes I prefer to wait until a perfect ready made thing is in front of me and all I have to do is pay the price stated on the final ticket. I include H SOs. There is something to be said for seeing and paying for the very bag agreed upon.

I don't remember if I wrote in this thread already.

My thoughts are Hermes makes very special bags but they have always been on the conservative end of the leathergoods spectrum. Apart from some well-noted novelties they are mostly classic. Alice Shirley (at a talk) spoke of her "playfulness" as an expression of creativity. Hermes uses play a lot in their digital marketing and artwork, but when they try to do it with products it's not always successful IMO. I need brands like Gucci or BV to sometimes turn-up the volume on creative play and/or sensuality. Only retro H bags seem to embody this like the Sac Mallice (1980s) Metdor clutch (date?) or Verrou (1940s)

Papertiger, I agree there is a significant amount of trust you need to have with these artisans. You are paying at a minimum 50% deposit. But, the ones I’ve used came highly recommended on TPF. And I did some due diligence inquiring with other TPFers who worked with these vendors. Also, the Mila Jito Wanderbag was featured in an article in the New York Times.

880, the ring is really pretty special. It’s rapidly becoming one of my favorite pieces of jewelry.

What a stunning bag! The leather looks so silky and the color is perfect

Great thread! I have reduced buying other bags but I still get tempted by the LV canvas. I bought my first Fendi mini baguette last year and love it. I use all my bags in rotation H or non H. I find my classic flaps are more stylish for formal occasions. H has my favourite travel bags the Evelyn tpm and mini Lindy. I like the variety from different styles and fashion houses.
