Once you buy H bags do you ever go back?

I think about it and yet...

Recently, I rehomed some non H bags, keeping only a handful that I love: BV, Celine, Prada and an LV speedy. However, I find I don't carry them as much as I used to as I primarily reach for a B30 or my K28. I have occasionally looked at other BV bags as I love the colors and woven leather but they are also expensive and the quality of the leather and the workmanship are simply not up to H standards. And, in Paris in September, I went to Alaia to look at the Le Teckel in off white but my BFF pointed out that I would simply be buying a place holder until I got a Craie Birkin...and she was right.

I won't rule out the possibility of 'going back' but rn it seems unlikely that I'd buy other designers and am more likely to carry something that I own but don't carry much anymore.

I’ve been thinking about the ML for a long, long time as I felt like I needed a “beater” crossbody bag that is safe enough for traveling. And while I was ruminating about it, the price has gone up-and-up and IG keeps feeding me all these fakes out there which is so off-putting… So while in Madrid a few months ago, I got myself a Loewe small puzzle as a souvenir bag, well made, iconic (I had the medium size but found it too big), great leather, fills the void at less than half the price of a ML.

Buying an H bag takes a lot of work! And with the pandemic behind us and with us getting out more and traveling more, I no longer have the time or energy to keep going back to the boutique to buy-and-buy-and-buy with the hopes of getting another H bag.

And so in answer to the question, I will continue to go to H for unique, limited edition or blue-box bags, not as popular, not easily-faked designs/leather/materials… and consider other brands for utilitarian bags.

And yes, I do acknowledge that to be offered LE H bags, I will need to spend on higher-ticket items… which works for me, as I would rather have 1 or 2 high-ticket items, say a $20K lamp or 2 x coats, than buying 23 x $700 towels or scarves… if that makes sense…. ikr?!?!? only in H world does this math seem rational… LOL
This makes sense to me :) I love my Loewe mini puzzle too

There are many single independent artisans that do arguably higher quality hand stitching than Hermes. And other bag brands with different style ethos. Depends on whether one likes to change bag styles or not. . . I tend to wear mainly Hermes bags bc my RTW styles are so varied. But, I certainly have other brands that I wear too.
I love the small artisans dearly and I’ll buy them in addition to H. I just got a Le Cindy from Atelier Renard as I couldn’t find a bag elsewhere that truly met my work needs. I’m obsessed with this thing. The craftsmanship is impeccable and the ability to customize to fit my style and needs was fantastic. There are side pockets and I was able to add a laptop pocket in the interior. The leather was as high quality as my H bags too. I don’t think I can go back to purchasing other brands after this.

My spouse ordered a custom laptop bag from Nichols of London we are picking up next week. It’s hybrid machine and hand done. The finished pics look beautiful and the leather was quite nice (just not as nice as mine). I’m looking forward to seeing it live.

Beautiful bag.. Wear it well & the color combo is a standout!
Another example of exceptional craftsmanship from a small atelier ..

Currently I'm pretty happy with the bags I have. My H Birkin, Ramesh era Moynat and a few more contemporary designers, Mulberry, Jerome Dreyfuss etc etc.

I do get bored occasionally though and start looking!
I love Hermes for the quality, the brand (and the way it's owned) and the way they stand behind their products.

As I find it hard currently to find anything that has quality that matches the price (in my opinion) in other luxury / designer brands and / or hasn't been involved (or may be involved) in some scandal be it advertising campaigns or actually made in sweatshops, I'm a bit loathed to spend £1000s on other designers at the moment.

Consequently (and you may all think I'm a bit mad!) I've been searching high and low for smaller no name or contemporary bags that are good quality leather, ethically made and are at a price point that it doesn't really matter if they won't repair it later.

For example this https://guibert.fr/en/baby-grooming/739-baby-grooming-saddle-calf-black.html is currently on my radar as a possible work tote. I'd like to check it out in person next time I'm in Paris but appears to be a French saddle leather, made in France, hand made (I think!) and a fraction of the cost so I don't need to worry about it.
Le Tanneur is another brand I'm considering (their French made range) along with a few others.. the search continues, but as I said, it's more of a boredom thing than an actually need a new bag!

Thank you for posting this. Very tempting. I wonder if any of the members here who live in Paris are familiar with tne brand. I look forward to checking it out!
Anyway I am going off topic here - but Guilbert is exactly the sort of thing I’d be looking for when not buying Hermès. However as I have never seen them in person it’s hard to judge the quality. I mean you could look at a fast fashion brand and on line their items look fine…

I’ve owned other Hermes bags for a few years now, but after buying a Kelly, I feel like I finally completely understand what the hype is about. Now I can’t see myself ever wanting a bag that isn’t from Hermes again, because I feel so strongly that the confident of Hermes just isn’t matched by other brands.

I bought the bag on the resale market, so it’s not even like this is the high of getting offered a bag. I really just love the bag! Did/does anyone else feel this way? I’ll still use the bags I already own from Chanel, Gucci, Celine, etc., but I just can’t see myself buying from other brands again unless something really specific pops up that I want.

Anyways, I feel like I’ve totally drunk the Kool-Aid now, and I’d be shocked if I’m alone. Does anyone else relate?

Yes absolutely can relate :D congrats on your Kelly! But, after a few decades and lots of Hermes, sometimes it’s nice to pull out a metallic Chanel for evening or a mini lol. My Loewe mini puzzle is great for travel, and if you fall into H RTW, it’s nice to mix it up a bit, so I wouldn’t get rid of other bags too soon :)

ETA: as I get older, I sometimes prefer to wear a lighter bag. Hermes is heavy
