I liked both the ball gowns, the Reem Acra one I especially liked, but I got a kick out of watching Tim Gunn get all cute and puffstrutty about Jason Wu being *his* student!
The day stuff didn't really impress me much.
I liked Jill's boots, but the silhouette of the coat not so much. Maybe on a taler person. (color addressed below)
I didn't really care for Michelle's coatdress, it was just a little too House of Windsor-ish for my tastes (And wasn't Tim diplomatic about that!) I did like the color, but not so much on her.
Mr Puff thought she should have gone more bottle green if she felt she just had to do something in the chartreuse family, I'm not sure if even that would work on her, those colors tend to work better on cooler skin tones, or, though you'd think it would be the opposite, on people with more gold than cinnamon.
Speaking of colors and skin tones, I know I have very controversial notions about blondes and red, and I will give Jill props for not picking a red that was just wrong, but neither did she pick THE probably 1-3 out of about a squillion reds that would have looked great.
Both boys were blah in the day, I guess they didn't have much wiggle room, people probably gave their stylists lists of what had and hadn't been worn by Millard Filmore who spilled goose on his and so it is now considered bad luck or something.
For the balls, I'm assuming Barack's stylist was really, really nervous, or maybe Millard had a goose incident at night too, and there were memos for that, but he ended up dressing him way too safe and boring.
Joe's did much better, I liked the little pop of collar-tie contrastaction.
(And although somewhat beyond the scope of this thread, M & B got sliced up for sandwiches. About all that can be scrawled on the dancing score cards is that maybe by the time they are as old and have been married as long as Joe & Jill have, they will look a little bit less like a pair of terrified 15-year olds who ditched dance class to play Spore sent out by their stern camera-wielding parents at the first quinceanera either of them has ever attended. That said, while Michelle's non-alleged box-step activities were polite and unremarkable for anybody who was ever subject to Cotillion Abuse, Barack did provide us with the cardio-vascular benefit of hearty laughter. Mr Puff was reminded of a young giraffe, stomping along the leafy trail of a Kenyan forest)
Edit to note, I forgot to mention that on the kids, I liked both colors, but I think I would have taken that ribbon belt thing off the blue coat, and either think of something else to do with it, or save it for another occasion, maybe an oversized hairbow with a lime green party dress.
Putting Michelle and the girls all in such bright bright solids made my thoughts turn Windsorward again, although it is a very good technique, it works, the Queen has been doing it for 50 years for a reason.
(For those unfamiliar, the idea is that people have been waiting a long time to see you, so you dress in a very bright solid color so they can see that dot of color from far away, and know that yes, they really did see you!)
