I don't understand why some people are so anti-box. If you put a real scratch in togo, lisse, or even an exotic, it's there for good. But box can be totally resurected. It is ideal. Plus NOTHING feels like box, I think it's better than a new scarf!
For me, box is a formal leather more suited to kelly, drag, constance, perhaps bolide. To me, the birkin is essentially a casual tote style of bag-box just does not seem like the right leather. I also do not like retourne/souple style in box. Box looks best as sellier.
I am also one of those people not crazy about exotic leathers for a birkin and certainly would never buy a diamond encrusted one- a bit over the top for my taste.
In a lot of ways I agree with you. Box does feel more formal, it stands straighter, it has a sheen to set your heart racing, yet it challenges you by showing every encounter it experiences. Then it allows you to rub them into an even more beautiful shine than it started with - in short it ages beautifully.
But for me, this is the very reason it works equally well with the numerous workhorse bags, both formal and informal. Worn tucked and belted, the birkin exhibits a wonderful shape, and serves as contrast to the looser structured leathers worn either batwinged or straps unthreaded. So in short, the tote and retourne, have more than one character - it is dependent on the wearer and them chosing how it's worn as much as the material in which it has been made. JMO![]()
Box is my first H love.
Box is not "fragile" and I can testify it ages beautifully.
Here is a picture of my 35 Black Box Birkin when I had it 2 years ago...
