Just received an email from my Paris leather SA. He has confirmed that even if all 3 types of Barenia leather ( Barenia, BF and Gator) are put through the same process of soaking in lanolin for months, it doesn’t render it water resistant. We have to remember that Hermes has to err on the the side of caution and they don’t recommend any leather getting wet at all, although my Epsom Kelly has had 1/3 glass of Krug spilled on it, by me on a flight, with no harm done. Heritage Barenia of course, has a much longer history to report on, but what he would say is all 3 types will gradually darken with time, even with light use.
