I have Kellys from the 80s and they came with straps? I asked if get could change them to double loops, and they said it wouldn't be worth the cost to me. They did suggest to keep the bag light.

The main reason I use my Kellys is because of the strap option. Order a strap and use it with caution. For example, don't put much in the bag when using the strap, and don't carry the bag for more than 2 weeks at a time. Hope that helps keep your Kelly in good shape :)

Thanks for your sound advice.
I have decided not to buy the shoulder strap , and am now used to hand carrying the Kelly and loving the vibe. I only wanted a shoulder strap for occasional use .
I use my Evelyne far more and it's good to give the shoulders a rest sometime!

Looking at older Kellys on Ebay , a lot of the more worn looking ones show problems at that area where the handle is fixed by the rings .

Any time :)

Why don't you use the canvas strap from your Evelyne for the Kelly, if the loops will work with it (I know that some of the older Kellys don't have a lot of space to attach a strap) just to see if you like it? Good luck :)

Yes. I did think when I first replied on here a couple of days ago.
I have a gold Evelyne PHW and the BBKelly has GHW
I'm not good with either mixed colours or mixed metals but I'll have a go for fun.

I'm wondering about the weight issue. Isn't it the same stress on the handle whether it's carried by hand or w shoulder strap? How much effect does the extra ring have on the weight/stress issue?

Or does the shoulder strap just encourage us to overload the bag?

I didn't go in to the details with the SA .
I imagine the rings on an older Kelly being small will be subjected to torque by the attachment links for the strap . I guess that is why the D rings were introduced, to prevent twisting or swivelling at the rings for the handle .

This is a very useful thread: making us aware of Mautto and Chapman.
In UK a Chapman is about £43 in p&p against a Mautto at is about £47 ($66) and might incur additional customs/import/handling charges.

I take note of the caution not to overload Ks used with shoulder straps.
Have any members with Ks that predate the extra D ring noticed any damage to the base of the handles?

I have older Kellys with without the double rings and I have never had a problem. If you are going to put bricks inside of it, that is another story.

Like you, it hasn't been an issue for me either, but like you, I have learned not to overstuff any bag, unless i am traveling, and then, I have no self control :)

I have a routine for travel and predates my ever using an H bag on a trip. I go through my regular wallet, and take out only the things that I feel that I am going to need. I use a small wallet or card case. It makes life easier and less worrisome:smile1:

I can easily fit my double fold Bearn wallet, Bearn key case, iPhone, make-up case, and H zippy, sunglasses into the 28 retourne. I will admit it is a tighter fit into a sellier. I don't find it all too heavy for a 28 or the shoulder strap on a vintage bag. I used a 28 black box vintage (no double rings) with the strap on a trip with no issues.

Received my black custom canvas strap from Mautto and can't say enough good things about it! Quality is superb. Although it isn't the real deal, I can wear it on my Kelly with pride (my biggest worry). I initially ordered the 1.5 in available on the website but found the hardware too large and heavy for my K so decided to go with a custom instead. Lynette, the owner (assuming she is) was an absolute pleasure to work with too. Thought I would share - for those of you on the fence but refuse to wait months for a strap order at the boutique [emoji2]

Which hardware option did you choose for your custom order?
