I looked at the catalog again to look at the earrings and necklace. No way are they worth $42K for silver jewelry!!!

I have spent similar amounts of $ on jewelry before. But then again the items were platinum, diamonds and unheated Burmese rubies, Columbian emeralds, natural pearls and the like.

I cannot see any sane person buying that stuff unless they have so much money, it ceases to have meaning.

How long will this thread keep going until we all agree Hermes prices are outrageous on EVERYTHING, including our beloved bags .... but for those we all can find thousands of excellent excuses to justify price...:giggles::giggles::giggles:

That's why I've taken to the re-sale market for things like 32CM HACs. If you shop around, know what you are looking for, and have cash in hand—you can find bags at reasonable prices.

IMO prices in the US for Hermes bags have gotten to the breaking point. It's really hard for me to justify buying $12K+ bags, especially when I already have a really nice collection right now.

Couldn't agree more. Love what I have and have sold what no longer suits my lifestyle. Work now with a select number of trusted resellers whose pieces are unique and prices are reasonable.

I agree. The craft store sells leather scraps. I can make one for less than a dollar. I can probably make five for less than a dollar.

That is my fall back position as well; I've worked with leather in the past, still have quite a varied selection in both hides and scraps, and wouldn't dream of buying something I can make for myself.

Of course, I can't make pencils, but I still would never dream of doing anything so silly as buying one for that price :nogood:

Okay, I will admit it...I came thisclose to getting a USB port and cup holder when I was in Paris last year! The leather, even in little bits is so gorgeous - and my daily cup of Peet's is in serious need of a style upgrade! Plus the exchange ratio was fabulous. But I flitted off to other stuff - probably the fountain pen - so the spell was broken.

But hey, I absolutely draw the line at that unsharpenable pencil!

I did email my SA back regarding the $42K silver jewelry.

"Wow. The price for the earrings and necklace are a bit above what I'm willing to pay for Sterling Silver jewelry, no matter how exquisite. Please do not bring in those pieces on my account."

For perspective, I tried on the new line of VCA jewelry, Bouton d'or--the pink gold, diamond Carnelian and MOP. The bracelet (which is TDF) is $48K.

I agree that H jewelry is far overpriced, especially when judging the intrinsic value of the precious metals. One can buy fine jewelry from established jewelry houses like Cartier, VCA, or T&Co for much less money...this is especially true for sterling pieces [T&Co pretty much cornered the market on that in the world of "higher end" jewelry]. Heck, even some of H's costume jewelry is over $1K!! There are a few pieces from H in silver that MAY be worth the markup due to the unique creativity of the pieces [I LOVE the Galop ring and bracelet for example] but overall it is not worth it to me. Of course, if I had endless money I may not care one way or the other haha.

Great choice on the VCA piece! It truly is a stunner!!

I have not purchased the VCA yet. It is on my wish list though.

I like earrings and a necklace from the latest H catalog. Mind you the base material is *silver* and with carved hard stones, e.g. onyx, carnelian, lapis and small diamonds. The earrings are $17,700 and the necklace is $25,100.

Ouch. Just Ouch!

You mean L'Monde d'Hermes? Those pieces that looked like shrunken Elizabeth Locke or Elizabeth Gage pieces (I get those two mixed up)?

Watches are supposed to be getting tinier. I got my Ralley (sp?) watch fixed up w/battery ready to go.

I really like chunky jewelry with an oomph. My ideal would be David Webb. Have you seen his rings? I saw them a couple of years ago at a trunk show at NM. Huge, chunky, like deco on steroids. And his broaches from the 60's, the figurals -- the dragons, lionesses, bulls, a slightly sinister dancing goat, all wonderful.

The scarves at least have resale value once it's time to move on to a new design.

I can let go of those without too much heartburn. Anything else, much harder or impossible.

Yes, L'Monde d'Hermes -- and it does have a shared aesthetic to Elizabeth Locke and Elizabeth Gage. I like David Webb, but I need smaller scaled pieces of his. You are right, Webb's jewelry is like Deco on steroids.

I just tossed my Vogue magazine that had an article on those VCA pieces. It was the issue with Taylor Swift on the cover. I quite enjoyed reading about those bouton d'or
necklaces, etc., they are charming and feminine, not over the top. Since those pieces were originally produced mid-century I bet the concept trickled down into costume jewelry as well.

But the mid-20th century was feminine era -- Dior's new look, big hats. And those VCA beads would look great with tiny watches (which as I said earlier are coming back in).

This thread cracks me up!

Can I add the pens to this list? Especially the rollerball ones. At least fountain pens seem fancy... but you can get a great roller ball at office max.

I love the perfumed cranes and horses. Overpriced? Sure. But things you can mail or give to someone in an envelope - that are special - are just rare these days- and everyone loves an H gift. So at 4 for $80, it's only $20 to give someone a unique, cool, artistic item...I am ok with it as I am with all the really inexpensive pieces - like the petit h ornaments.

Yes, again, $80-$100 is way too much for a stuffed scrap of silk, but on Etsy it would be $20 and no real H scarf, no cachet, no orange box. I use these kinds of little items as hostess gifts. I don't like to show up at any home event empty-handed, and ANYTHING in an orange box is sooooo much better than another bottle of wine or a candle.

The things that floor me are $6K backgammon sets and the like, but each to their own!

I bought one of the Click-a-zoo animals several years ago, and while I don't remember how much it was, it was definitely in the "you paid how much for that???" category. But I tend to go into these purchases knowing that I'm not buying it for the value. I got the Rose Shocking elephant, and it serves no other purpose but to sit in my glass cabinet. I liked the color, the cute factor, and the creativity that went into the design, so no regrets. But I don't tell anyone how much it cost...

I have two click-a-zoos, and I'm right there with you. I feel a little bad paying that much for something so small that serves no purpose other than decoration, but they make me smile every time I look at them, so I think that makes them worth it.

Sorry guys, I was trying to remember what these were called!!!
