Ummmm, Patti Labelle and her group back in the day, heck even George ******* and the Funkadelics and that's just some of the Black artist.I dunno. I've been around for awhile and I can't recall anyone else on the pop scene who is quite like Gaga with the OTT-ness. I guess Grace Jones maybe? Drag queens? Gaga is just the one who is getting all the attention, and thus my own perception is that pop stars such as Nicki and Ke$ha (shudder) have burst onto the scene and are emulating the OTT look. Not outright copying Gaga's look, but elements of their looks are similar in how OTT they are. Just my two cents and personal perception. No one has to agree.
GAGA is definitely NOT an original. She may be original for THIS decade.
I think if your career is "Pop Star", wearing jeans and a t-shirt is a bad move.
The thing to remember with Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Gaga (my divine, beautiful, flawless rose Gaga) is that more often than not, they've all known (of) each other a LONG time before the general public knows of any one of them. Collaborations happen, inspirations, idea borrowing, ... all of that stuff happens.
Katy Perry and Ke$ha are bar buddies from way back. Katy and Gaga were on the same hustle back in 2007/8.
Gaga knows some random people (Audrey Kitching is a prime example) that you wouldn't think she'd be friendly with.
Also: Record labels design you.
I don't know that Nicki ran in quite the same circles that the aforementioned entertainers did, but what do you want her to do? Listen to her music and tell me you think it would be 'On Brand' to dress in a demure and understated manner. I defy you to. LOL!
Also, I think that because all of those women were song WRITERS before they performed on a professional scale (Nicki did features forever before being solo, so she's in there too), they had ideas and looks in their heads that they thought would hammer the product home.
ETA: Also, Ke$ha has claimed "Garbage Chic". You can't take that away from her. Haha!
