Thanks to everyone who replied here! I too am going to wait to see and touch them before forming an opinion. I had read about the "leather mulch" and it worries me like some of you, regarding how durable it may be. Sorry I couldn't reply sooner as my Dad is in hospital about to have surgery. So my hands on shopping will have to wait a while. Thanks!
My thoughts are with you, I have been there and know how helpless you can feel.

I too will have to see it but the last time I looked the same bag was on Macy's with no mention of bonded leather. I would hate to buy something and not know what it is actually made off.

That would be my biggest fear. I suspect some retailers will not advertise the bonded leather on certain bags.

I checked out the Mercer today. It is leather bonded to saffiano. The outside is soft leather, the interior is a pliable saffiano material. The SA explains that this allows for a structured leather bag. It is also lightweight. My favorite color from the bunch is Plum. Im not jumping to buy one just yet. Im going to stalk for reviews to see how it wears first.

Great photos. The bags look nice, but I'm still not comfortable with bonded leather. I looks like they had to reinforce it with a saffiano leather backing, as you indicated, to hold its shape. Bonded leather and saffiano leather are cheaper to produce than regular soft leather because they are processed leathers. Bonded leather is old scraps of leather mashed up and repurposed. Saffiano leather is treated and stamped because it's usually from pieces of leather that would not be suitable for sale (i.e., insect bites on leather "skin" or deep marks or scratches in the leather). I like saffiano leather because it still is the original leather "skin" even after processing. Bonded leather is not.

It's funny they would go to the trouble of bonding the saffiano on the inside as a stiffener so that the bonded pebbled leather outside stays firm. To me, you either like the real pebbled leather and how it "puddles" or you don't. And that's when saffiano is great since it is more structured and can withstand even NY upstate winter weather.

And, the kicker is this line (so far) is on the exception list for discounts. So, they want consumers to pay more for cheaper materials. Makes me go hmmm...

That was EXACTLY my thinking the first time I saw these bonded leather bags on the website. Paying more for a cheaper bag.
P.s. my couch is bonded leather (we were on a budget for a cheap couch to fit our new home) I would NOT buy a bag out of bonded leather.

Did they pull the Mercer or did they sell out? It's no longer on their website!
Odd, I can't find plum anywhere [emoji45] , other colors available at different sites... this Walmart ad is disturbing
