Well Google would be your friend in this case but since you didn't do that ... Keith Haring was an incredibly influential self proclaimed "street artist" in NY in the 1980s. His popularity exploded and he is known as one of the most influential artists of his time prior to his death in 1990 and beyond. His work is shown all over the world.

One of his main legacies is providing assistance to kids in need and those with HIV/AIDS.

Here is a link to his foundation:

Yep, some guy. I'm clear across the country from NYC and its street art, in the 80's I was more concerned with raising my son and earning a living.....plus I really have no interest in art, so ergo, he's just 'some guy' to me.....though I am fully aware of who Andy Warhol was and of his art. ;) Just because some of us didn't know who he was doesn't mean we are ignorant, uneducated or uncultured, it just means he and his style of art was of no interest to us.

Well, based on the feisty responses, I suppose we can truly say we are a family here on Purseblog because like all loving families, we argue!

I had no idea who this Keith guy was either and did google him as well as asking my artsy friends. Turns out he is a big influence in the art world. I know nothing of art and never will as I don't understand it. I remember visiting the art museum and watching people get emotional over art pieces, thinking why?--it's just a damn painting.... but my friend pointed out I get the same emotional response when I'm in the middle of the coach store drooling over a purse, why?--it's just a damn purse (but it's a red pebble leather Rogue I would respond!).... so my point I guess is, we all have our passions and sometimes those passions blind us to what others see (or don't see). It doesn't make any of us bad, just different.

Now for a collaboration... I'm a Star Wars nerd, .... a completely solid black Rogue with a Darth Vader hangtag...

Just because someone is not personally influential to you, does not mean they aren't considered hugely influential in the art (and in Haring's case, activist) world. I grew up nowhere near New York but I do remember his art from safe sex campaigns/HIV & AIDS awareness campaigns back in the 80s and 90s!

It does really surprise me that someone would say there is "not much" out there about him when they looked, as there is quite a lot. Of course there might have been far more if he had not died due to AIDS related illness at such a young age.

He and Andy Warhol were actually good friends.

This is a good article written/interview of him when he was still alive (obviously, since it is an interview!):

But of course, not all artists, or cultural influences, strike us all the same way. I for example have zero interest in Mickey Mouse, ha ha.

Haha, well I've always wondered what the BFD is about Star Wars!!! I know I'm in the minority on that one! :giggle:

No, WE are the minority.

Haha, WE are truly in the minority, aren't we? I've always been repulsed by the whole SW phenomenon....and I'm old enough to have seen the ORIGINAL movie when it first was released on the big screen -- even then I only sat through the entire thing because I saw it at a drive-in with friends!!

I never saw it, I never wanted to see, definitely not my thing. Surprisingly, I actually know quite a few people around my age who's never watched it either, but we're still the minority. (I was a senior in high school when the original was released. Damn, now I feel old as dirt. )

If an artist is meaningful to you and you feel like they have had (and continue to have) a positive influence on the world then you should follow their lead. Kindly educate others about them, don't laugh at them for not already knowing. That's kind of how a community works, we share different influences and tastes and bring them to the table for everyone to enjoy. I knew who Keith Haring was, probably because I do live in NY, and I've seen some works in person at the MoMA. I'm not his biggest fan but if someone didn't know about him I'd link my favorite works of his or something. Just my two cents

If you think YOU'RE old as dirt, remind me to tell you about how I used to party with Rexy, Steggy and Wooly Mammoth!

You shouldn't assume so much.
I looked him up.
I'm still not interested!

I have never heard of him either until this thread. Googled him and none of his artwork looks familiar to me either. Sure it doesn't help that he died when I was only 3 years old.

I also have no idea who he is/ was. I saw him mentioned here but didn't care enough to google...

Hey all, any chance we could all put an end to this "One Upping" each other about whether you've heard of Keith Haring, or whether you don't care about him or whether you should have known who he is or why you shouldn't, etc. etc. -- it's taking the fun out of reading this thread already -- what difference does it make who has or has not heard of him??

Just my 2 cents. Personally, I'd love to hear more opinions on your wishlist of who or what you'd love for Coach to collaborate with, down the line.

P.S. Anyone else love Betty Boop?

I see Betty Boop more as a collaboration with Kate Spade.

Just because you party with dinosaurs doesn't give you the right to rain on my Star Wars love...:biggrin:

Just for the record: It wasn't my intent to insult anyone. When Keith Haring was referred to as "some guy" I thought the person was being sarcastic. And regardless of everyone's age, I have to admit that I was surprised that many people didn't know who he was. I mean I wasn't born when artists like Magritte, Dali, and Escher were alive, but I still know who they are and how influential they were. Using your age is no excuse.

Dismissing the opportunity to learn about things and people, even if they don't interest you, is a missed opportunity. It encourages closed mindedness and cuts off curiosity.

Isn't the reason why we come to tPF to learn and explore? I found tPF when I was searching for into about a specific bag. I read a lot on all the different types of brands, even if I don't own them, just to learn.

Anyway, if any of you didn't know who Keith Haring was, you probably do now.

Enjoy what is out there! There is so much! Even if it doesn't interest you.
