So I finally bought a Stella as a reward for doing well in my first semester in grad school and it arrived this morning. However, I'm tad disappointed with the condition that she is in. In the listing on Ebay, the seller stated that there is a minor light pen mark on the interior and that there is also a small dirt smudge on the bottom back of the exterior, which is also minor. When she arrived, I did a thorough inspection and there were dirt smudges on the bottom and there was also a light marker mark on the front exterior which I'm quite unhappy about. Its not extremely obvious but it's there. :Push: There is also scuff marks on the lining. Maybe I'm just too fussy and since it's preowned I shouldn't be so picky? I'm wondering if I should return the bag or if I should ask for some refund as the seller failed to mention those details. The bag was on BIN for $550 and I won it with an offer of $310 inclusive shipping. Any advise? HELP!

i'd email the seller, and tell her about these additional marks on the bag and see if she'll do a discount (like 10%-20%) since they were not in the listing and you'd like to get the bag drycleaned.

Oy, I had a dud Stella experience, too. The Stella was my DREAM BAG...and I won a black one with the striped canvas lining...gorgeous. And I get it, and it must have been used to carry a bowling ball, because the part of the bag where the shoulder straps were attached was COMPLETELY stretched out. It became the saga of the "Saggy Stella". :crybaby: I just returned it outright, after much back and forth with the seller (who was nice in the end, and all ended well).

But if you really want to keep it, I'd just let her know that the bag is not exactly as described, and there are more flaws than stated in the auction. Because of this, you'd like compensation (I'd say you got a great deal overall), somewhere in the neighborhood of 15% or something (about what it would cost to take it to cobbler for a thorough cleaning).

Hopefully she'll be receptive to that. If she isn't, you have to decide if the stains/smudges are going to bother you to the point where you won't enjoy her, in which case you should return her outright, or whether you can live with them and still enjoy her.

I'm dealing with this with my asymmetrical (brand new) Faridah. Blah!

Best of luck! Keep us updated! What color is she?

jun3 and MPJ, thanks for the advice! I'm ruminating if I should keep it as on top of the extra defects it is also a little heavier than I expected it to be. I'm going to try and email the seller and see what are my options maybe? :hysteric: What do you ladies think?

wen - If you don't LOVE her, you should ask to return her (your reasoning can be SNAD). You don't want to have an imperfect Stella! I mean, unless you got her for like, $50, why spend that $300 on an imperfect bag you can't enjoy when you can put it towards a PERFECT bag?

I feel ya, girl!! I gave up on my Stella dreams after that first bag...it just hurt too much. *I'm being melodramatic because it's fun* :ninja: But seriously, it sucked so hard, and I was worried about future Stellas being saggy...so I went with the MP instead.

I want to drive down to DC and give you a hug.

MPJ, you're too sweet! I appreciate your kind gesture! Anyway, the Stella is my dream bag but now I don't know if it is anymore. Oh, the Stella is a nice deep burgundy red, btw. A really lovely shade of red but *sigh*

If you absolutely want to keep the bag, then email the seller to see if you can work something out. If you don't love it - no matter how great of a deal you got - there's no use keeping a bag you don't love. Believe me. I KNOW.

Personally, I think it's a gorgeous bag! I'd keep her. But I love Stellas.

I got a Stella in the exact same color off ebay for a little over $200 (incl shipping), but it was in much worse condition compared to the one photographed above. I think $310 is a good deal for a preowned MJ, but then again I totally understand how it can feel when you receive something that does not appear to be in the condition expected.

I recently won an MJ (different style) off ebay and though it was actually described in the listing as being in "great used condition" along with accompanying photos that showed a bag in great condition--I ended up receiving the same bag with leather discoloration throughout the surface (it was a totally different shade from the auction photos, and the leather discoloration was nowhere mentioned in the listing at all). I was lucky enough to get the seller to take it back and give me back a full refund.

This is what I wrote to the seller

"Hi, I would like to notify you that I received the bag this morning as you promised and I'm happy about that. However, upon inspection there were other defects on the bag that weren't mentioned in the listing. There is a dirt smudge on the bottom exterior of the bag and there is also a light marker mark on the front exterior right by the zipper and additional scuff marks that you failed to mention in the listing. Would it be possible to return the bag since it wasn't as described? I look to hear from you soon. Thanks!"

And the seller just responded to me and here is what she said

"Hi, I'm glad you received the bag. However, I did write in the auction (please reread the auction) the dirt smudge on the bottom exterior and the pen marks. I am very sorry, but there are no returns. I do hope that you will enjoy the bag. The price you paid for a MARC JACOBS STELLA bag is really an amazing deal as my original price was $550.00 and the price of Marc Jacobs keeps climbing as his success w/ Louis Vuitton continues to build. Thank You, Annie"

And this is what was written on the listing
"

Now tell me, did I read it wrongly or what? :hysteric:

I'm just being devil's advocate, but I think that when it's YOUR bag that you're selling and you're describing its flaws, it's hard to be completely objective. And when you're purchasing a bag, you're not only going to be completely objective, but you're going to be even more critical of any flaws. So what she probably should have written was, "Dirt smudge, 4mm across," and taken a photo of it. But to her, it was "minor," and again, she wasn't being objective.

I completely understand your position, and when I sell something on ebay, even when I say "no returns" I would probably allow someone to return something or at least offer to come to a mutually agreeable solution if they asked me nicely (which you did to her).

If the purse is SNAD, and you can prove it, will ebay refund you? Or do you have to prove it? Again, that's subjective, I think! Argh! I'm really frustrated for you. Bottom line, she wasn't objective in her description and she should have been specific. AND when you asked for a return/refund, she should have been receptive, IMO, since you have what I consider to be a valid reason for that request.

Is this something you could turn around and sell on ebay for a profit? Or even in the marketplace? If she outright refuses...I'm not familiar with those procedures, but I know the other ladies are more ebay savvy than I am. :shame:

UGH now I REALLY want to hug you! I was in Rockville for dinner - I should have sent you some hug vibes from there!

Wen..i would really contact the seller...if you are spending YOUR money on anything even if it's $1, if you are not completely satisfied you should try to rectify it....i would let the seller know that i plan to contact ebay and i would engage in a dispute....but make sure that you are willing to return the bag...if not then stick it out and contact her again and let her know your postion....if she still says NO then you really have no choice but to deal with it......this is why it's hard for me to buy a bag in any condition other than NEW....we ALL know what new looks like....everything else is subjective.

good luck!

MPJ, you're sucha sweetie! I got the hug vibes for sure!

Aggie, I just contacted the seller again and I told her that I wouldn't have bought the bag had I known there is a marker mark on the front exterior of the bag. We'll see what she has to say before I consider engaging in a dispute as I was just reading on that.

Melly, I hope this doesn't turn ugly and hopefully things would work out too.

Thanks for all your support, ladies! Means a lot to me! :cutesy:

I would file a SNAD if you feel the item is not as described. And also thought I would let you know the seller is a member here and has posted in this forum before...

I would write her a second time. Explain that the areas of wear are more than minor. And that the pen mark was said to be on the 'interior' not EXTERIOR. Ask her that if she will refund 15% of the purchase price to fund a trip to the dry-cleaners/ leather specialist, as you'd like to keep the bag, but are concerned as the wear is more than you expected. Tell her that you 'hope she'll comply, as the wear is more significant than described and that you wouldn't want to have to file a report with ebay'.

I really hate to be mean like that, as it kinda sounds harsh, but that's a flaw, and it wasn't minor. When I sell on ebay, I fricken go over the bag like it's a crime scene, because I'd feel awful if there was something I didn't disclose.

Sometimes you kinda have to provoke them a bit (the sellers) before they hand anything over...I had the same situation with my elleen bag, as there were pen marks in the corner on the interior suede...but I concluded she must have overlooked them, because I only noticed them after I went over the bag with a fine tooth comb. And I got such a sweet deal on that bag too.

But in your case, you paid quite a bit of $$ for the bag, and I think she should refund at least 15%.
