My professor told me Chanel bags are all made in China but assembled in Europe?

Just to clarify - in my case all the SA's I spoke to were very friendly (especially the girl from the Brisbane Dior store, who told me that if it were up to her she would refund me right away!).

It was the fact that the management (who I never really spoke to directly) tried to do everything they could to avoid me (so they did not have to refund me) is the problem I had.

I can understand why they would need to send your bag to France; it was made there, so that's where the parts were. Not every boutique stores parts, especially for a beaded or sequined or pearled bag, so those will need to go to Paris or they will need to get the parts from Paris. Perhaps they felt the bag would be best repaired by the artisans there in Paris. I'm sorry you had a less than wonderful experience there. :/

For special "LE" bags or exotics, all repairs would have to go through Paris. For an example, our dog chewed the DIOR charm off my one of my mom's LD. The bag was over 10 years old. We sent it to the US facility and it came back with the right part within 6 weeks. However, for my python LDs, my SA told me that she would try to send it to the US facility and if they couldn't fix it, they would transfer it to Paris. The bags were not sent in as repairs, but just as a maintenance cleaning or a "spa" treatment. Sure enough, the US facility wouldn't touch it and they transferred the bags to Paris and it did take about 6 months to come back to me. I rather they tell me that they can't fix it and have Paris do it, than attempt a poorly done job on two bags totaling about 20K! That would have been quite a liability.

I am not the only one who experienced this long wait. I believe another member on the Dior subforum said the same thing about her exotic repair. But I will say that it took them too long to tell you that the bag needed to go to Paris. Usually, if Dior can't repair an item for me in-state, they will tell me within 2 weeks from the date that I submitted the bag into the boutique.

I'm so glad I came across this thread. I'm getting so fed up with and stressed about these quality issues, and I'm not exclusively referring to Chanel. LV is worse, IMO. I know the main point of this thread is outsourcing, but I think quality is a sub-topic here. Admittedly, I have also been so naive and blinded by the exotic "made in France or Italy" stamps that I forgot these logo capitalizing companies are just businesses.

My husband made a good point to me the other night after a quality issue popped up with a Louis he just bought me. He saw how upset I was because he knows how passionate I am about the brand. He simply asked me this: why on earth would you want to continue buying this crap and giving money to a company that doesn't give a sh*t about you? And I think that's when it dawned on me that he was absolutely right. In retrospect, if I were to make a collective assessment of all of the high end bags I've ever owned, I would have to say that they have brought me more stress than bliss. It's sad, but it is so true. And I'm referring to the following: pretentious SAs who act like they're doing you a favor by letting you shop in their store, quality issues galore, the grandeur, delusional conception of inflation (aka price increases), overly high maintenance and care that diminishes wearing the darn bags comfortably, and the amount of money the entire effing experience costs to feel that emotionally abused. Because, YES - it's borderline abuse.

That being said, I'm done with all of it. I get more use and joy out of my lesser coveted brands, and believe it or not, the quality sometimes surpasses the higher end names. For instance, Kate Spade is a very nice, low key brand. Yes, KS items are made in China, but the company doesn't try to pretend otherwise. And I'm more comfortable with a $300-400 bag openly made in China than with a $5500 bag with production discretions.

I used to be an avid shopper at Louis Vuitton. I just started to get into Chanel. But now I don't think I have the energy, patience, or sanity to invest in these love affairs any longer.

Word. =(

I love Chanel for the brand and still keep buying. I am honest to myself and love the logo.

I will not try to convince myself that I can actually tell the difference from a handmade quality bag made in Italy versus a Chanel bag with a "Made in Italy" tag. I know I am am paying for the logo and I love it.

I have been to Italy and have seen gorgeous handmade bags. Without a logo, it's just a gorgeous bag, and not for me.

I want my logo and the Chanel image. That's the truth for me and why I buy and will continue to buy Chanel.

I adore you are being true to yourself and knowing what you want. Actually my husband mentioned to me the other day that he is not surprised that Chanel or those luxury high end brands outsource and have their hardware supply chains from Asia. It is the business trend these days. As long as they keep maintaining the high qualities of their products, and the customers are happy with the products, then things should be fine. It is his point of view. :smile1:

You have always stayed true to yourself and why you buy Chanel and I do respect you for it. :)

The problem is that more and more and more posts are being seen where things are not okay, they are not maintaining the high qualities of their products, and a lot of customers are not happy. I've been an avid cheerleader of sorts, but I just can't justify it for myself personally any longer. I'm going to where things sparkle and shine: jewelry. That I can research and justify to myself.

Gone that way already Tutu :D See you on "the Jewelry Box" forum soon. Already encountered some familiar "faces" from this forum :smile1:

Hi tutu! Good to bump into you... It has been a while.

Jewelry... I'm with you. That is actually my true first love... Chanel takes a second seat compared to buying nice bling.

I'm not sure what type of jewelry you're into, but all your nice Chanel items would look lovely with Mikimoto pearls. Mikimoto doesn't scream logo like a Love bracelet or Alhambra necklace, but Mikimoto pearls are top quality, glow like no other and illuminates a person. Definitely worth the investment to get a few strands... It's subtle, loud, elegant bling. I love pearl strands. :-)

Hello there Willey - nice to see you giving your input again :smile1: Always speaking your mind :D

Everytime I think of Chanel prices, I remember Lagerfeld's cat that has to have 2 maids and fly private jets. Returning to topic, I read that book long time ago and it was quite eyeopenning. The author even quoted Tom Ford for saying that it is possible to create a luxury brand artificially or smth like that. I think unfortunately it is so easy to get us consumers fooled that the large corp like LVMH use it. Like the word "handmade", I always thought of it literally made by hand, handstitched like Hermes bags. Apparently, it means now sewn by machine, only certain parts are attached by hand. I don't know about Chanel, but LV definetly moved their production to Asia. I haven't been into LV lately, but I saw tags saying just LV Paris, w/o "made in" at all. The US laws are very strict about origin, not very familiar with European though. So I guess, it's up to us whether we are buying into all those marketing tricks or not.

Interesting Tom Ford said that as he has now created his own "luxury" line.
