My Going Grey Gracefully Journey.

Congratulations on making 3 months!! You look great! I guess they don’t call it a “transition” for nothing...! It does seem painstakingly slow, but every month when I go and get trimmed, I feel like another milestone is reached. I’m so glad this thread made it to TPF!

Thanks! I have no gel or stylers in my hair and I’m totally make up free in this picture. My hair gets a lot more curly with gel but if I have nothing planned I just let it go free.

I have a cut on Tuesday which will be my first one since stopping the dye. I have clumps of hair growing back. I didn’t realize the damage the dye and heat styling were doing until I stopped!

I'm hoping my hair gets healthier when I stop. Now you've got me excited to start. I still feel the best thing for me right now is to start dyeing a lighter color so when I do grow it out it won't be as stark.

You have beautiful hair, and it looks great “free” and easy! I’m surprised how shiny and healthy my natural hair looks coming in. It’s been so liberating to just go and get a haircut without all the dye! Hope you enjoy your dye-free event this week! Have you checked out “Katie Goes Platinum” website/YouTube? She has some great transition stories!

Yes! I belong to her Facebook group page Silver Revolution and I follow a bunch of people on Instagram. I have my own gray hair account to document my transition @jay_goesgray

It helps to see all of the pictures of people transitioning. Makes you not feel alone in the process.

I'm really interested in going naturally grey at this point as well. All the hair around my face is white and it's also going grey in the top of my head. However, my hair is naturally a dark brown and my stylist won't let me go all grey because she said she'd have to bleach all my hair that isn't grey and it would ruin it. She said we can discuss it again in 10 years.

I doubt you have to bleach your whole head. Your stylist could add highlights to help blend the gray. Or you could just stop dyeing altogether, although I know that’s a scary prospect.

Remember, stylists make a living convincing us we “have” to do these things!

If you look at my first picture from a few years ago you can see that ive just highlighted to blend in the grey and as the years rolled by it go lighter and lighter.
If she still wont do it...find another stylist..its your hair and your choice.
Ring around and see who would do it for you.
Ive been lucky with mine...Ive been going to the same hairdresser since I was a little girl...its her daughter that does mine now and they were completely supportive. They use me as an example.

I was naturally blonde, then auburn, and now at 50 I have so much gray that I get highlights only once a year to blend the gray with the dark. I get compliments all the time from my patients - I now embrace my gray, as it’s very fashionable! It almost appears platinum blonde. People always ask me what color it is and I tell them I really don’t know haha. View attachment 4409904View attachment 4409907

Looks fabulous!

Have been letting my grey grow for at least several months now. I became mainly blonde with lowlights a few years ago. It was so easy I only had to go every three months. Because of the high/low lights I have, my grey is not a hard demarcation line right now. (my color in my youth was a nice shiny medium brown, sigh) I had a cut today, and walked over to my colorist and told how I was sorry, I was going to my natural color, and if I didn't like it, I would just come back. He replied, "you'll be back" LOLOL We shall see!

Interesting that you have a person for color and a different person for cuts. For me, it’s the same woman. I’ve been going to her since we moved here over 12 years ago, and I’m a little worried that it will be awkward because I’m pretty sure she won’t be supportive of me growing out my natural color. Like you said, We shall see!

Thank you so much! The time between highlights kept getting longer and longer. I went from 2 to 3 times a year to two times a year and then and then one time a couple years ago I realized I hadn’t gotten highlights in almost a year, and I didn’t feel like I needed them. I liked the way it looked and my patients and even strangers were continually giving me compliments. I realized I had finally gotten so gray that it appeared silver and blonde or platinum or something. I have never really dyed my hair unless you count one time 25 years ago when I wanted to try red for fun. And I don’t get many highlights - not a full head, just a mini partial which basically means a few tiny ones. For someone who does not feel comfortable going cold turkey, just adding a few tiny highlights might help you feel more polished during the transition.

I think I need to take photos rather than digging up photos off my camera roll. It will show the grey/silver better.

Your hair looks amazing! I can see why people stop to ask you about it — you really can’t tell if you do anything to enhance the color.

If you don’t mind my asking, did you do anything to help the transition to gray go more easily, or did you just stop dyeing cold turkey?

I have to say, I am nostalgic for the time when I didn’t do anything to my base color and just got highlights a few times a year.

well, some of the cutters their own color too. Somehow I ended up with the owner of the salon, he only does color. N=Maybe the stylists Ive had there (been going for 20 years) did not do color. My current stylist does not.

I asked my colorist about going grey and she said Non! She said she encouraged it with her blondish clients but grey would make my olive skin look washed out and older. I can see her point but the thought of coloring my hair till death seems almost sad. I work with a lady who never even started dying her gray and she looks awesome with her white locks - it looks very clean and sharp.

I hear you about the dread of having to do this to the end of time. That’s was really got me started thinking about it ... the base color isn’t staying in my hair the way it used to, and the thought of going in more frequently, month after month for the rest of my life just isn’t appealing! Also, I’m not all gray yet, and I’d rather grow it out now than have a hard demarcation line later.

I think you’ll find lots of ladies with all different skin tones growing out their gray on Grombre on Instagram. I think it can look great on all skin tones. I’m very fair skinned (Scandinavian heritage) so my tendency is to look washed out. I’m going to give it a try anyway.
