I would spray it with a dirt and water repellant spray (available at most shoe stores) to keep it clean.

thank you! This is the most expensive thing I have ever purchased and a little out of character, but I fell in love with it and "had" to buy it.

Should I have this scotch guarded?

Never heard of a scotch guard but sounds good! Canvas is easy to take care of. Just try not to set it on the ground, use anti-bacterial gels on the handles, or scratch it up against other materials. Congrats on your new bag.
