Hi guys,

I received an email today saying that Mulberry will now be offering an exchange service, return an old bag and get credit towards a new one kinda thing.

Just wondering if anyone will make use of this service? I’d be interested in seeing what kind of value they would give your “trade-in” or whether you’d still be better selling privately.

I got the same email and my local store is part of it.

I think it’s a good idea. I do have an unused Emmy that I am contemplating moving on, but my trouble is I don’t really like the new styles, so I’m not sure what I’d spend a gift card on if I did it via Mulberry.

I like that you can also buy restored bags.

Me too, and wondering how long it will take to get the stock in and reconditioned and back out on sale or will they be selling items previously returned due to faults etc

Valuations will be interesting too

Loving the possibility that you might be able to get previously discontinued bags as I’m still on the look out for a couple of previous designs. I’m in the same boat as you @Wordsworth in that I don’t particularly like many of the current designs!

I’ve seen people mention that you will get back 25% of what your bag originally cost and if you don’t know it will be 25% of the last selling price of the item.

I wonder how this would work with bags that they still sell but were purchased before the price hikes. I have a Heritage Oak Bayswater which was £695 when I bought it but I think they’re up to £995 now? Would be interested to hear which price the discount would apply to!

I heard about this from news reports but haven’t seen any emails yet.

I’m sure their own resale price will be higher than 25% but if they are well reconditioned, and clearly will be genuine, it might be interesting.

I just bought a used Selwood on Fashionphile and started reading about how Neiman Marcus has bought a minority share of Fashionphile to get an "in" on the booming secondhand market. Millenials and Gen Z are buying secondhand items 2.5 times more than other generations, so it's a way to adapt to the changing consumer demand. An article criticized the move because it would just make NM shoppers go to Fashionphile over NM, so the same article brought up how Patagonia has its own buyback and used goods program. It keeps the quality controlled to the brand's standards, and it keeps customers buying from Patagonia directly.

That said, I think the Mulberry Exchange is a step in the right direction. I like that they'll be reconditioning the bags. But I hope the buyback price gets better. At 25%, I can't imagine Mulberry getting a lot of bags back. Resellers can get much more than that.

Also, I'd be interested in the program being available outside the UK. I live in the US, and while I've seen a huge increase of secondhand Mulbs on Poshmark, it's still a poor amount of choices compared to what I see being sold on Mulberry FB groups (with resellers from UK).

Has everyone else been drooling over the preloved section on Mulberry?

They’ve had a great selection right across all eras & quite a few bags I don’t recognise eg the Chatelaine.

Another preloved update, I’d love to know how they’re pricing these, £445 seems reasonable for a looked after secondhand Bayswater tote, whereas £545 seems excessive for an SBS in absolutely wrecked condition
