Hi ladies. Does anyone feel that Missoni sort of "sold out" by creating their line for Target? I LOVE Missoni & have been wearing it for almost 2 years now & I just feel like wearing my original Missoni pieces doesn't feel as special as it used to since they decided to create a Target line. I see people walking around wearing the Target Missoni & it just irritates me! Missoni is supposed to be an iconic, luxurious brand. To me, it would almost be as bad as Chanel creating a Target line..... anyone feel the same way?

I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I own no Missoni because it's too $$ for me. $99 for a discounted scarf isn't cheap to me. Now that I have some Target Missoni stuff, I'll be sure to check out "real" Missoni for the day I may actually be able to afford it.

I think it widens the public's awareness of the brand which isn't necessarily a bad thing. To some ladies here, Chanel and Missoni will never be affordable, so that's Target's main audience.

I'm looking forward to more designers "selling out" to Target so I can see what the hype is all about.

I own a couple Marc Jacobs bags. I bought them used and love them - I have an old school Blake, Sophia and multi pocket bag with the suede interior. If MJ ever had a Target line, I'd be all over it. I wouldn't feel like the collection cheapened the brand and I'd carry my "real" MJ bags with even more pride!

I imagine Versace lovers aren't too happy with the H&M collection about to come out...

Yes, ABSOLUTELY! When I saw this line for Target I immediately thought of people who bought into the designer line and felt terrible for them. IMO, it does "cheapen" the brand. I don't think I'd ever wear Missoni again, to be honest.

I agree with your "sold out" comment. The brand either doesn't care about it's designer line customers or they're losing them and sought a quick way to infuse cash into the company.

I have a feeling this thread might get closed because there is one in The Wardrobe section but......
When I first heard about the Missoni for Target I was a little bit concerned, but I have to agree with pinklepurr on this one.
It's a collaboration, not a line, for Target. There's a difference. If it was a "line" like Vera Wang permanently does for Kohl's or whatever, then yeah, maybe I would think they "sold out". I don't think Jimmy Choo's or Lanvin's collaboration with H&M did anything to cheapen their brand. Mulberry did a collaboration for Target and so did Alexander McQueen. It was a limited number of pieces sold during a limited time frame. Everything is sold out - BAM! No more pieces to be made.
If anything, I think it brought awareness to Missoni. It got people really excited about the brand. I don't know about anyone here but I was checking out some Missoni pieces on sites like Net-A-Porter and a lot of their Missoni stuff was sold out.
I happen to have a few Missoni pieces (not from Target) and I have no hesitation wearing them at all. If someone thinks I bought them at Target it doesn't bother me any more than it does when someone asks me if my BV Veneta is a Cole Haan bag. If it did, I would be buying things for totally the wrong reason.
I think it comes down to a lot of the design houses wanting to get their product out there. Missoni only has the regular "Missoni" label and the "M Missoni" label as far as I know. No different than Burberry and Burberry Brit. It's not like they're doing a third line called Miss Missoni and selling it in department stores, like DKNY and CK Calvin Klein. Those are the kinds of things that cheapen a brand if you ask me. Much like pinklepurr wrote above, I think Missoni is hoping this collaboration is going to get people excited about their brand and are looking to inject some new blood into their customer base. It's a brilliant marketing ploy. What better way to introduce people to your product. Make a limited number of pieces, have them available at a store such as Target, create hype, then take it all away in the blink of an eye. Voila! Everybody wants a taste of Missoni now! You can't expect people to want to purchase your brand if it isn't available to them. Not every city has a Neiman's or Saks. It was also offered at Target in extended sizes. Some people might be really horrified to see some size 16 woman wearing Missoni - gasp! but I say more power to her! Fashion is for everyone. Size 2, size 16, cosmopolitan city, small town, 17 years old or 57 years old, on a budget or unlimited credit - it's not what Vogue says it should be, it's what's inside you that truly makes fashion what it is.
Besides, Missoni-inspired pieces are all over the stores this year.

Thanks for your response! I do think you have a great point concerning the difference in lines. And I, by no means, think that people with $ should be the only ones able to buy designer lines. BUT, I think it adds that special element to be able to save up for that great BV, Chanel, or Hermes bag and know that you have purchased a piece of designer history.

I totally understand how you feel, Genie. I would feel the same way if it were "Chanel for Target" or "St. John for Target" or (heaven forbid!) "Hermes for Target". I did buy a few Missoni for Target pieces. I do not own any Missoni and probably wouldn't have given the line a second glance if it weren't for their made for Target line. They created some gorgeous items and now I will definitely check out their regular line.

Yes, I do feel that way too. The same thing happened when H&M did the Jimmy Choo line. Some of the shoes and bags were really close to the regular Choo line.

I own Missoni orange label as well as M Missoni. I have been buying and wearing the brand for probably over 15 years and I feel that the Target line in no way cheapens the brand.

I also own BV, Chanel and Hermes and would not care at all if they did a line for Target or Walmart either. If the lines were exactly the same as the more expensive line, then I would question how "luxurious" that brand was to begin with. Since almost all luxury brands have a more affordable line these days (and this is nothing new it has been going on for years), I don't understand the objection to some but not others. Didn't Karl Lagerfeld do a line for Macy's and earlier for H & M? I don't think that made most Chanel fans stop buying the brand. Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Prada, Halston, Valentino and many more brands have a lower price line. I don't see any difference here.

Also, the lauch of the Target line, made me go through my closet and start wearing the Missoni pieces I already had. And a relative went out on a Missoni hunt and bought a few (main line) things after seeing the Target ads. So, imo, the Target line may have prompted Missoni customers to want more of the main line items also.

I know there have been a lot of people souped up about how great the quality of the Missoni for Target pieces are, but in my opinion, traditional Missoni is so intricately woven that it is truly artwork, and classic at that. The pieces for Target, while adorable, look much more 70's/trendy and though many of the items are knit, tend to have the same effect as a printed design rather than the intricacy of Missoni's regular lines.

You are right about that. The original Missoni pieces are like works of art! I guess there is a big difference in the quality of original Missoni and the Missoni Target line.

You make a very good point! I hope that the Target line does bring attention to original Missoni so more people can understand how amazing it is. Thanks for your response!

I have Missoni and M Missoni pieces (dresses, cardigans, scarves) and I way In LOVE with their zigzag. After their collaboration with Target I don't feel like wearing my pieces. I hope the pieces at Target were not the same quality as the true Missoni.

Thanks for your post! I'm glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way, although I have had some comments on another thread of someone accusing me of being "elitist". I had no intention of coming across that way!

I haven't seen any of the Target pieces in person but a few of the ladies have stated that they're in, no way, like original Missoni. In reality, I doubt they would be since original Missoni pieces are, truly, luxurious & you get what you pay for with those items.

I think that the actual Missoni for Target items themselves were cheap and something I would never personally be interested in; however, to say that you are not interested in wearing something you were once enamored with simply because a less expensive line was produced comes off as rather pretentious. So basically you are saying that you only liked Missoni because the label is expensive and not everyone can have it? :shrugs: That is how I am interpreting this -- correct me if I am wrong!
