Larry Rudolph as her manager and Terry Richardson directing the video--well no wonder she is naked and making out with a sledge hammer! She needs to stop working with such creepers and start hiring true professionals (there have to be a few left in Hollywood...somewhere...) Of course, at this point she probably enjoys all of the attention and reigning her in could be difficult.

Rihanna doesn't make great pop music... her producers make great pop music. And her management team market her music, and to a certain extent, her image.

But I do understand why she is extremely popular... she is marketable, beautiful, has the it factor. No denying that.

Miley on the other hand is not near as marketable, has no it factor, and just comes across as making a parody of herself. I do not think she will have a lasting career at the rate she is going.

Just my two cents.

I remember reading something about how Rihanna's albums get made, basically her record company schleps all the top notch writers and producers to a camp, say go! And they come up with the hits. I dont discount though that Rihanna has a distinctive voice and a certain charisma that ensures that these songs become hits so that's not to take away anything from her, because she's riding the wave and doing it well.

See, ironically I think Miley is actually more talented than Rihanna. She started off acting and singing and I think she's written a fair amount on her albums. By all accounts she's heavily involved in that aspect and if she stops posturing long enough, she has a great voice. I think once she gets this newfound ratchetness out of her system (another Rihanna emulation - wasn't it just a few albums ago that Rihanna herself found her inner hoodrat?) she will have a good lasting career.

Lol. Miley's not involved at all.
She hired Larry Rudolph (Britney's manager) to architect her comeback and that's exactly what's going on. It's all him and his team.
She doesn't have any writing credit on WB and shares it with 7 other writers on WCS, so that should tell you about her involvement...
She seemed to be more involved during her previous era, but at the end of the day, it was just as manufactured and "try-hard" as her current attempt at being a grown-up pop star...

And just because you sing and act, doesn't mean you're good at it...

I said she's written a fair bit on her ALBUMS, that's just a quick google search later, dont know about her current album cos I assume that information isnt out yet. Acting/singing was something she's been immersed in from a young age and it's progressed from there. It's the same as Britney who always had entertainment in her blood, from her MMC days, so for me, Miley's 'artistry' such that is, is more sincere and authentic than Rihanna in my opinion; a stunningly beautiful girl from a small island who was plucked and groomed into a star. If she hadn't made it as a singer, I think the powers that crafted her could easily have made her into a model, whereas the impression I got from Miley's background and interviews is that singing was always her passion, hell it runs in her family so this career path is natural for her so I can buy that she's way more involved and immersed in the creative process than someone like Rihanna.

She'll have to decide on a new shtick one of these days. We've seen her half-naked and wagging her butt, naked and licking a sledge hammer, etc., etc. It'll be yeahyeah, beentheredonethat, yawn for the audience.

Wonder what it'll be? I don't really see her going down the sex tape road, more of a 180° turnaround.

I just told you how much writing credit she has on her new album. At least the songs that have been released so far - and Rihanna's got writing credit on some of her albums, too. Your point?
Also, comparing their upbringing, Miley's been born into the entertainment industry. Dolly Parton is her freaking godmother! She had it easy. She didn't need talent, she had a name. You think Disney would have chosen her if her dad wasn't Mr Achy Breaky? :lolots:
Rihanna on the other hand had to work for it and really want it to make it off the island. If Rihanna didn't really want to be a singer, she wouldn't be. She obviously pushed for it or else she'd still be back home in Barbados or just be another Teairra Mari...
And we all know about Britney being groomed into an entertainer very early on in her life and we also know how much she still wants to do it. [/sarcasm]

Remember when Christian Aguilera did this whole thing? She went from innocent little pop star to colored dreads and chaps to black hair and then back to a more glam look. Christina didn't look as much like a dumba** but she still did it. So maybe we give little miss some time to figure out exactly what she's trying to get out of her system.

I don't think she's flattering herself or making herself look good by doing it, but she's 20 and I'm assuming trying to figure herself out.

I really hope this is it, but part of me feels like this whole image change is not genuine at all... That it's carefully preconceived by a bunch of marketing experts, with the aim of selling records and becoming as "famous" as possible.

I agree with you! All she wants is attention, whether it's good or bad, and she sure it getting it. I don't think it's genuine at all. If only her parents would step in, guess they don't see anything wrong with what she's doing?

Great, thanks for your encyclopedic knowledge of Miley's brand new album, all 2 songs off it. And that same encyclopedic knowledge should show that Rihanna has far fewer writing credits than Miley. I compared their upbringing because why not? Miley was born into an entertainment family, she wanted to be a singer. Rihanna came from an island, and she had a great team who molded her into a star. If you claim that Miley's path was manufactured the exact same can be said of Rihanna and then some because you seem to be ignoring the fact that by all accounts Miley seems way more involved in the creative handling of her career than Rihanna. Anyway one thing I veer away from on the Interwebs is going in circles so thanks for chatting.

Cant the same be said of all these popstars? I mean look at Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, hell even Taylor Swift has a schtick for garnering attention. I think when it comes to album promo time they all do what they do to get the most attention.

Well of course, all these chart topping pop stars have big machines behind them, but the only one of those that did a 180 kinda-sorta similar to Miley (but I think less "extreme" with the forced sexyness and all) is Rihanna. I feel the same way about her and her public persona.

I wasn't trying to compare Miley with other popstars though. I was just saying that it seems like she thought: "oh, wait, I don't stand out enough to appeal to a bigger audience.. ****e, what should I do...", and then she or her mother decided to consult Larry Rudolph and his friends to see if she had any potential to become like the "greats", i.e. Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga...

It just feels like a businessplan rather than a natural phase, that's all I'm trying to say.

I don't necessarily agree with the Rihanna thing. She's already said in interviews years ago (around the GGGB era) that how she started out was not ever what she wanted. She said that she'd cut her hair prior to that album but when the big wigs at the record label found out they made her put a long weave back in. That she never wanted to be the "island girl" as far as marketing and music but that's what they made her do. She really had to fight for Umbrella and look what it did for her career. Only once her name got big enough did she start to push in the direction she really wanted to go, and then when her career exploded did she take a hard stance and say "now we're gonna do it my way".
