Mods...clarification...if we're discussing the racial overtones, specifically to MC and her songs/performance, is that OK?

Charles, you addressed this to the mods - but if I may weigh in as simply another tPF member, racial issues are such a sensitive topic which can turn incendiary quickly. This is most likely why discussions of politics and religion are not permitted. Lovemysavior was shut down pretty quickly, when all she did was voice her point of view.

We each draw from personal history and experience, that of our ancestors, wherever they might have originated. Some of us may view this from a sociological angle. We have our viewpoints, each of us. How could we not? I was part of an interracial couple, had the chance to absorb experiences - good and bad - which others haven't had from a culture that was not the one I was raised in. Has this influenced my viewpoint? Certainly! I'm only saying this to illustrate that a gossip thread may not be the right venue for discussion of such a serious topic.

She has a pile of cash and she is spending it on hitmakers. That is why the industry is co-signing on her. I'd love to see the budget for this album because at this point she is going to have to sell several million and tour extensively to turn a profit.

Album budgets have shrunk drastically. You don't need big money (or an expensive studio) to make a record anymore. Touring, merchandising and sponsorship are where artists make money these days because record sales are a joke now. Even if an artist does sell so many "units" its hard to retrieve all that money because of the crappy deals the record companies have signed with companies like iTunes. A "platinum" record used to mean 1 million units. Now all you have to sell theses days to go "platinum" is a significantly smaller fraction of that.

I dunno...sure, Madonna isn't going into opera any time soon, but I recall back in 1984 when she started to get big and start controversy, and what she was doing, it wasn't anything like the antics MC is doing. Listen to Madonna's interviews and her routines...way more intelligent and thought out. I would liken her to Gaga, but nowhere near MC.
And this goes back to the r@ce issue. Madonna used homosexuals extensively in her acts and in her life, but she wasn't exploiting them or their culture. She was taking certain aspects and sharing them with us..educating us. She wasn't mainly using it to make money. I compare that to MC doing what she's doing now and it seems rather clear the exploitation that MC is doing. That is an issue and that is why people are upset and that is why the R word is being used. If you don't feel the same way, Ok, but that doesn't dismiss the pretty obvious situation.

Intelligence aside, (yes Madonna AND Gaga are light years ahead of MC in that department, no argument there) but back in the day what Madonna did (remember the erotic book/album?) was shocking for that time. We have gotten so desensitized about things like this, I mean jeez some of the rap videos are soft porn for petes sake. I just don't think MC pulled it off because she was trying too hard. It wasn't genuine, she didn't know what she was doing and it came off lame.
The fact remains, she is the "shock" flavor of the month, whether she sucked or not.

Agreed. But I bet those producers are charging her a grip. To sound black.

Yep... this is it. Everything about the "new" Miley is 100% contrived. People can sense when something isn't genuine and with her whole act it's so over the top that it just screams desperate and insecure. It comes across as comical, not groundbreaking.

She is blatantly trying (and really hard) to portray an image of what she thinks is "cool" or "sexy" and it's falling completely flat. The only thing she is accomplishing is making a parody of herself. She reminds me of that girl in highschool.

She's ruining her career IMO (or maybe she already has at this point).

Just my two cents.

We agree. :)
This is my point. I don't think people were shocked in the same way they were with the Sex book Madonna put out. Most people were shocked for the reason I highlighted.

She was talking about religion...something this forum doesn't like to talk about/won't allow. Unless I missed another post of hers...:shrugs: (when she quoted me originally the response was a lot more negative before she/mods edited it, yikes...)

I really cannot believe how this performance has been the topic of the week.

She's crazy, goofy. Is it genuine? Probably not. She has to stay as relevant as the next and knows that. I don't think she's playing the fame game (as in, I don't think she's clever enough to know what she's doing) but I also don't think she's smart enough to poke fun at any culture. I am not calling a racist smart, I am saying they have to have intentions and I don't see that in her.

Madonna did it before her, who knows who'll do it after her...they all shake their asses for $$$ and the world turns. Prior to Sunday I can't remember the last time I heard anyone say anything about MTV. They knew this would get a rise out of people.

EDIT: P.S. For those who do not live in major U.S. cities, is this seriously the first you've heard of twerking? This seems to have taken the world by storm due to Miley which is srsly strange to me.

It's strange to me too. Twerking has been a 'thing' way before Miley performed at the VMA's. Some people are mad because they think Miley is getting credit for a dance that has been part of the african culture for ages but i don't think that's true. Anyone who uses social media, youtube, vine, etc knew about twerking way before Miley entered the picture. I think it's the older generation that is JUST becoming familiar with the dance because of the attention from Miley's performance. Everyone i know thinks she butchered the dance and embarrassed herself. I have no words for people who think she invented it or something...

In regards to the blurred lines video... That model running around topless with the body is Emily ratjakowski. She was a Nickelodeon kid herself and does a lot of nude shoots. She was also on a Carl's burger commercial. My uncle happen to shot the commercial!
