Personally, I don't think it's right for anyone to say something horrid about Miley's body. =( We are all women with different body types.

However, I really disagree with people who say that Miley's display of sexuality is self-expression. It is hugely entangled with her desire to become a part of an "urban black" identity. Why her actions and performance at the VMAs was NOT an act of empowerment? Because she exploits the stereotypes of another community in the service of breaking out of her Disney image. She is so desperately trying to get away from that "good girl" persona, she catapulted to the other extreme (not just in sex, but in race). It's superficial, offensive and oppressive.

Her are actions that are MEANT to shock people, but had the completely opposite response. People are embarrassed for her because they don't see a fully grown confident woman expressing her sexuality. They see a desperate little girl, on a sloppy, rocky, road to self-discovery.

Nothing is wrong with choosing to be sexual, crass or both. But it IS wrong when those actions stem from a desire to be an "urban black girl" while lacking the true life experience and influences from that background.

Miley comes across to me as the epitome of extremely insecure and immature. She's that girl. She is desperately trying to prove that she is "cool" and a "sexy adult". I still say that once she gets some maturity on her I think she will really regret showing out like she is and how hard she is trying. Her managers, etc. should reaaaalllly step in and try to talk to her. Who knows... they probably have with no luck.

I think all of this body criticism and sexualization is part of why she's so insecure and does things like this. Her body is the only thing shes valued for. Super successful female singers perform half dressed and get criticized if they don't have perfect bodies and that's considered ok. But look at the successful men- completely covered. Robin Thicke looked stuffed into his Beetlejuice outfit but no one said anything about that.

you know, normally I totally agree with you. the focus on bodies, be them large or small or thick or thin or whatever really strikes a nerve with me. usually.

that said, for some reason the criticism of Miley's body actually makes me pleased. I know that's weird to say, but I think it's because Miley's body is not real. is she tall and skinny? yes. but not THAT skinny. she is forcing her body into an unnatural state, displaying it 24/7 because that's what she thinks is sexy and hot and sells. so I kinda like that people are objecting to the altered state.

I don't know if that makes sense.

Dear daughter, let Miley Cyrus be a lesson to you.

Yes, this is what happens when you constantly hear everything you do is awesome. This is what happens when people fawn over your every Tweet and Instagram photo. This is what happens when no responsible adult has ever said the word “no,” made you change your clothes before leaving the house, or never spanked your butt for deliberate defiance.

If you ever even consider doing something like that, I promise you that I will run up and twerk so you will see how ridiculous twerking looks. I will duct tape your mouth shut so your tongue doesn’t hangout like an overheated hound dog. I will smack any male whom you decide to smash against his pelvis – after I first knock you on your butt for forgetting how a lady acts in public.

Why would I do that? Because I love you and I want you to respect yourself. Miley Cyrus is not edgy or cool or sexy. She’s a desperate girl screaming for attention: Notice me. Tell me I’m pretty. See how hot I am. I know all the guys want me. All the girls want to be me.

You probably know girls who will emulate this behavior at the next school dance. Don’t do it with them. You are far too valuable to sell yourself so cheaply. Walk away. Let the boys gawk and know in your heart that they see only a body that can be used for their pleasure and then forgotten.

I’m sorry if you’ve ever felt sad because I haven’t gushed over everything you’ve done. My role is to praise when praise is due, but also to offer constructive criticism and correction when it is needed as well. I’m sorry if you’ve ever felt demoralized because your Instagram following isn’t in the thousands, and I’m sorry those “selfies” can never capture how amazingly beautiful you truly are. I’m sorry if you’ve ever wished you had a friend instead of a mom, and I promise you that I will probably get worse when you hit high school.

Dear daughter, I am going to fight or die trying to keep you from becoming like the Miley Cyruses of the world.

You can thank me later.
