I too am like you, I prefer the look of white gold and silver. It's unfortunate that most purses have gold hardware.

Agreed! The medallions are really not a big deal. I decided to test on it because I didn't want to risk anymore more expensive. My everyday purse is being using this whole weekend so the Impatient me figured that since it's the same metal, it was the perfect thing to be used in my experiment . I also use the screen protector on my Hamilton, like you lovely ladies suggested. I will continue using that method on flat surfaces because it is a very simple application. I might protect my lock with this product.. But we'll see. Next application will definitely be on the chain of my Hamilton.
CLARIFICATION : I coated the feet of a no name purse to see how it would affect another kind of metal.
I have to wonder if any of the paint peels off when you remove the protector? Has anyone ever found out? I also wonder about condensation? Couldn't that cause rust if any moisture gets in it, after too long of a period of time?

I'm seriously considering this for my Hamilton shoulder strap chain. Please let me know how that works for you. :smile1:

When you remove the screen protector from the hardware? No. The screen protector does not bond to the metal enough to peel any surface paint. Remember, it sticks on there with a saline type of liquid only and when you remove screen protectors from your phone they come off easily without any residue or bonding to the surface. However, if you're referring to removal of the liquid protector...Melbo will need to test that out.

I edited my comment to add about condensation? Couldn't that cause rust if any moisture gets in it, after too long of a period of time?

Condensation under the screen protector? That hasn't ever happened to me. They dry completely upon application and if any moisture were to get underneath then the screen protector would come off and then you would reapply.

Anyway, we started this whole conversation to deal with the gold hardware fading off the silver metal underneath. In my experience, this happens from scratches caused during use of the bag, NOT from rust or condensation or the elements. I'm not really worried about all that. I'm worried about scratches on the ghw that will cause the shw to show underneath. That problem is solved by covering the hardware with a screen protector or a liquid protector like Melbo has found.

If the application is correctly applied the protector will bond well. If there is moisture underneath the product
it will bubble and there will be no adherence. That would rule out any trapped moisture and therefore any rust? You remove with xylene which is one of the two solvents you can use in the prep. I used denatured alcohol because they only had xylene in big quantities and I only needed a little. Will have to make a trip to home Depot. I will test on the medallion once I get the chance. I am not worried about removal though. If it's safe to use on homemade jewelry I'm sure it will be okay on our MK metal. I'll test to see how it responds and if that scratch I purposely made disappears. 😊

I will post my results on the forum once it's complete.

Melbo, any results yet after using your liquid protector on your Hamilton shoulder strap chain?

Unfortunately, after I wore my Hamilton Tote to a shopping trip, I decided it wasn't for me. It was so heavy and large. I'm a 5' girl, and I love big bags but it wasn't for me. I sold it, so I wasn't able to test the liquid on the links. My next step is to remove what I have on the medallion.

Did you have the large n/s Hamilton tote? I can understand at 5 feet tall that bag being too big and heavy for you. I own two and don't use them every day, just on days when I have extra stuff I need to lug around, and I'm 5 feet 11 inches tall! Thanks for all your help otherwise. :smile1:

Unfortunately, I do not have a solution. However, I have the same problem with my Hamilton bag with rose gold hardware. I have had it for several years and I use it regularly so the bag is definitely exposed to a lot of stressors and varying conditions. There are huge dark spots on my lock so much so that I am considering buying a new one (I wish MK still made the rose gold hardware). However, despite the tarnishing the leather itself has held up magnificently so it would almost be a waste to purchase a new one.

Is your Hamilton made with soft leather? I've never seen one with rose gold hardware.

It was the large signature Tote. Not sure if it's the same size?

I checked my oldest MK bags and no fading whatsoever on any gold hardware. I keep ALL my bags in the dust bags, stuffed to the gills in a dark corner of my basement. My basement is super dry and sealed well. Maybe it depends where you store them or where you live demographically. Either that or I'm very lucky.

I think the fading occurs from use, not the elements. It comes from the hardware rubbing up against things and getting scratched. You take great care of your bags, so probably won't have any problems with fading. I haven't had any problems so far, either. :smile1:

I do change bags everyday, your probably right. Every bag I own looks brand new, no matter the brand or age. My 1st gucci crossbody bag from 20+ years ago, looks like I bought it yesterday. My mom taught me as a teen, handbag care 101. She said if you want them to last you can't use the same bag daily. Switch 'em out frequently.

Good to know! Now I need to buy more to rotate, lol! 👍
