What kind of metal is this? Can't we just apply krylon Rust Protector Clear Coatings? Doesn't it protect against discoloration?

Rusting and discoloration of the hardware is not the problem. The problem is fading of the gold tone of the hardware that reveals the silver base metal underneath.

I feel like there should be a product that already exists for this! I will ask around. Especially because I want to protect my new investments!

Good luck in your search. Please let us know if you find anything.

My experience has been that if you can prevent scratching of the hardware, you can prevent the fading/discoloration. It doesn't occur on its own from the air or elements. It occurs from use of the bag.

Will do.

Found this company called Everbrite. I wrote them inquiring on their product. Of course they described how their product was pretty much indestructible, but for the starter kit isn't that expensive and it's worth a shot.

Hi Melbo,

Thank you for your interest in ProtectaClear Coating. Absolutely this will keep your purse harware from scratching. You will need to apply 2-3 coats and allow to completely cure before use.

ProtectaClear is an easy to apply, one part clear protective coating that will seal and protect metal from sun, salt air, road salts, oxidation, corrosion, moisture, tarnish and other damaging elements. Protectaclear will not chip, crack or peel and will never discolor, darken or yellow. ProtectaClear is self-annealing and can be maintained indefinitely.

ProtectaClear is tough and durable and is practically invisible on polished metal. ProtectaClear is food safe once cured and is safe to use in kitchens, on jewelry or on other metal that needs protection.

The metal to be protected will need to be completely clean and dry. Then, ProtectaClear can be applied by spraying, dipping or brushing it onto the surface. ProtectaClear is self leveling so any brush or wipe marks will level out when left alone to dry. We have step-by-step directions on our site.

We will be happy to help you figure out what you would need for your project. ProtectaClear can be purchased by itself or in Kits with polishes and cleaners securely on our website or by calling our office at +916-852-0200 or Toll-free in the U.S. - 800-304-0566.

Please contact us if you have any additional questions. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks again for your interest.

Thanks for this info. Even though they say it prevents scratches on hardware, I think the primary use for this product is to prevent rusting and fading from the elements. I need to look at it more closely, but I'm still a little skeptical. I wonder if anyone else has used this on their handbag hardware?

I'm thinking of purchasing the kit. I have a purse that I don't mind testing on, especially on the feet.

Okay, I ordered the 4oz can. Will give a full update once the process is completed. I will even test on other random purses and hardware to see if I get mixed results. Fingers crossed!

Has anyone used clear polish on purse feet? I've used it on Coach fobs so stones wouldn't fall out and it worked well and couldn't tell unless you put it up to your eye

Just wanted to let everyone know... MK Customer Service e-mailed me back forwarding me to a cobbler who specializes in Michael Kors handbags as well as others. I read good stuff about them. They actually e-mailed me back giving me a quote... 50-75 to fix the hardware.

I'll be most likely sending my bag in this week and see how it goes.
