Michael Kors "copies" other designers?

While I do agree that MK is derivative...At this stage in human history there really aren't that many more potential bag designs. Everyone is copying something.

I agree. There are only so many functional bag types out there; otherwise, they're criticized as impractical and esoteric. I also want to bet that many iconic shapes were around long before their popularization by major designers.

So long as the original has an arrangement to their satisfaction or doesn't mind the duplicity, I see no problem with it. With MK, the branding is distinct. While obviously inspired, it's not as though anyone's passing it off for another brand.

His latest, the Colette - looks like a you-now-what - maybe he thinks he can do this as cred for him being at Celine before it was mainstream?? But he does copy alot of the other brands' iconic pieces - not just purses - he does alot with his watches, jewllery and clothes. I think his shoe line is where he has his most originality, too bad he can display that creativity with his other products.

I think the problem people have with Michael Kors is that he does a high end RTW line with $2k dresses, and is considered a designer on the level of like, Marc Jacobs or somebody. But then he blatantly knocks off other designers like Valentino. Marc by Marc Jacobs bags aren't even blatant knockoffs. Even though other designers do it, they aren't as "big" or "respected" per se, as Michael Kors is. So if he's such a great designer with the reputation he has, why can't he come up with his own bag design that aren't obvious copies of his competitors?

Even die-hard fans of MK may find it hard to say that the Colette bag isn't a copy of the Celine Luggage. I had to Google the bag to see what you were talking about, and I guess I'm not surprised to see it. He added his logo charm there, which makes this bag have way too much going on at the front.

And I agree with what you said about the watches. They copy everything from Rolex to Cartier. That being said, so many lower-end watch brands copy Rolex that people probably don't know that a lot of popular watch designs owe their origin to Rolex.

The question I too would like to know. In past years he sat as a judge on Project Runway, blasting contestants for lack of creativity and copying other designers work among other things, while he himself is plenty guilty.

MK watches are made by Fossil in case someone may not know it.

I love that even MK bags are somewhat knocked off these days. His bags are overpriced for what they are.

LOL "NX", what brand is that supposed to be anyway? Errr, Nicolas Xavier (made that up)? Haha.

Is he just straight up incapable of designing bags? I know his watches are also Rolex and Cartier wannabes, but it doesn't bother me as much as the bags. Like he can design clothing and shoes without knocking off other designers, but why can't he do it with bags? Maybe because PR isn't about bags, he felt it okay to judge the designers for the clothes?

Regardless of the copying factor, I still find something kinda tacky about the majority of his bags. I think the hardware is too shiny and there's too much of it or something.

Exactly. The hardware is too shiny along with the leather. His store is located across the aisle here in LA from Henry Bendel and Fossil. I find the leather and designs of those bags more appealing-altho HB has that same big HB which I think looks tacky too. I wonder who makes the MK mainstream bags?

I also think alot of people find pleasure buying what everyone else has.....

I believe the MMK bags are manufactured the same place Anne Klein bags are. I read that recently but can't seem to pull up the reference.

Totally agree, copy cat designer.

He has taken almost every premier brand and has copied at least one of their most iconic pieces that people usually identify that brand with. I can see it doing it once or twice but he has done it so many times now and with so many luxury brands and he does not even do it at the "inspirational" level - it is totally at the copy cat level. I recall reading both Roberto Cavalli and Margherita Missioni totally calling him out on his copy cat ways in the media. I wonder if Phoebe Philo will do the same now with his lastest Celine Luggage copy cat (Colette) or the fact that she was his successor will give him a free pass.

OH MY GOD....that's really the copy of the year.....

I agree with you guys in certain areas...Sure he copy some of the Premier designer and those Premier designer seems like not lifting their finger to do something if he really made/did some kind of illegal. And my opinion on this is buy what you like and trully love, not like you are buying something just to show to the world that you have a "status" in life, and yes It seems like it's people who buy MK bags are just wanna be, NO people it's not like that IMO. When I bought my MK Hamilton in pebbled leather 3years ago I didn't buy it so I will look like a big shot looking like wearing the Hermes or whatever. For me I bought it because I like it and its made in leather and up to now that bag is still one of my favorite and my work horse bag. I do own some Premier designer and I bought them because I like it not because some French,Italian and from Spain made my bag, the "made in" for me is total bull**** IMO coz It's not because the little Chinese guys who work as hard as the french guy is better than him/her. I could easy spend another $1000.00 in LV store for another speedy...but guess what I choose to spend my money to Alexander Wang Rockie bag, made in lambskin and the bag is very well made by Chinese guy:-) I hope everyone is having a great day!
