Are they kidding? Is this the first ever film about slavery?? I don't think so! These people take themselves a bit too seriously. The same thing happened with Shame. It's a f^cking film! No doubt an educational and confrontational piece of celluloid, but a film none the less. Get over yourself!
She may have overstated it slightly, but one thing a lot of reviews have been pointing out is that it's really the ONLY film to directly confront the brutal reality of slavery. Amistad (courtroom drama with white protagonists) doesn't count. Django (cartoonish western) doesn't count. Roots was over 30 years ago, it was a miniseries, it's dated and does pull back some. And this, along with some of the other "black" films being released this year, is starting a conversation about race in America.
