For me, the sex addiction angle wasn't even the most powerful aspect of Shame. Shame touched me more as an adult survivor of a dysfunctional childhood. That scene with Brandon and Sissy on the couch had me in tears because that's exactly how me and my brothers interact, even though we're all in our forties now, even though we've left that childhood behind, it's still inside all of us and when we come together (very rarely) it's seething there under the surface like a horrible, disgusting monster and we all turn into monsters toward each other even though we love each other very much. McQueen captured this dynamic so realistically that it was almost too much for me to watch. Amazing.
