They also wrote letters to family members asking them to “recall” when they told them “years ago” about the abuse and to bring it up if asked to testify. Not to mention Lyle’s recorded conversations about how they were going to get out of prison because Leslie (their lawyer) had helped them come up with such a great defense. Ofc I’m paraphrasing.. but I’d read quite a bit about this before the Ryan Murphy Netflix spin. They are being treated better than they deserve in the slammer (IMO)
why aren't they in a real prison? they are murderers

Jose Menendez has since been accused by a few men (who were boys at the time) of similar alleged sexual assaults. He represented them in the music industry. There may be truth to their sons' accusations. For whatever it's worth...
The parents abused their children, imo
Plus, they were only 18 and 21 when they killed their parents.
IMO, they are no danger to society at large

but there are two reasons for incarceration - one risk to society and the other, punishment. do you recall their trips to buy Rolex watches right after the murders?
They did. nobody said that they were smart but still at one point, I could see them being released if they can support themselves and express remorse.

I, too, believe those boys were abused and neglected (neglected by their mother, who may have also been abused), and I also believe the accusers who have come forward since the murders. I do remember the sons' subsequent shopping sprees, it was bizarre. But it doesn't mean they weren't abused..

I understand what you're saying, but at 18 and 21 they were legal adults. I believe their parents abused them in some form as well, but it doesn't justify murdering them. They were at an age they could have left the house and started trying to live on their own. They obviously liked their lifestyle, especially considering the shopping sprees after the murders.

and not sure what the mother did....failed to protect them from the father?

I was in law school when this case made the news and I have zero inside knowledge and very little memory of the trial coverage. That being said, I attended my law school buddy’s book signing this week and he discussed this case at length. Matt Murphy, former chief Homicide District Attorney in Orange County, Ca. He is a crime correspondent for 20/20 and a practicing attorney. He had a lot of insight about the Menendez case that I was not aware of before he discussed the case at his book signing. The boys alleged that Kitty Menendez sexually abused them by oral copulation, which Matt believes is a complete fabrication. There is evidence that Kitty survived an initial attack and one of the boys reloaded the gun, went after her and finished her off. Matt also stated that there was evidence that one of the boys was negotiating to buy the chicken restaurant BEFORE the boys killed their parents. He stated, that over the decades of prosecuting murders where money was the motivating factor, there is always evidence of the criminals making plans of what to do with the money even before the murder occurs. That is exactly the case with the Menendez boys.

I tended to disagree with him about possible sexual abuse by the father. I tended to be more sympathetic that this may have happened. However, Matt had information from the boys’ cousin that this was also a fabrication. I now have no opinion.

That is Matt Murphy with his book and the Barnes and Noble staff in Newport Beach.

Edit to clarify, re: the cousin, Matt believed that the letter to the Cousin is a complete fabrication and not authentic.
