Travel Mayan Riviera--which currency to use?

Hi everyone,

I will be going to the Mayan Riviera for Christmas! I was just wondering if it's ok to just bring US dollars or should I exchange money for Mexican pesos?

I was there a few weeks ago..
the rent a car agency (Dollar) took only pesos..
we were told its a new law..
we used our cc..
The hotel was all inclusive..we tipped in US and when we shopped locally..they took
US..
they would whip out their little calculators and tell us, or the mechandise
was listed in pesos and US..
Use your CC as little as possible....


And don't put valuables in your luggage..
ours was lost..when we got everything back late on the first day..
my SO's was pilfered through and items were stolen..
when I called to report it, I got the feeling from the rep that luggage theft is common down there..

Have fun! Iguanas were everywhere and they were HUGE!

definitely get pesos - some stores might accept dollars, but they won't have any change and the exchange rate they give you will be crap

I forgot to mention that..
the change back is in pesos..

Just got back from Playa del Carmen a few weeks ago and stayed at an all-inclusive resort, so all we brought was US money. As we only did 2 major excursions (organized buy our travel agency) and hubby and I are more into siteseeing than shopping, we had no need for conversion to Pesos. But if you're going there and not staying at an all-inclusive, I'd suggest the use of pesos.

If its all inclusive you can use us but if you adventure get pesos. I always get them from atm in airport.
