Remember when she got busted insider trading?
Part of the reason she did it was to seduce the man who gave her the tip.
Martha was always raunchy and since she was so pretty to start with, she does not realize that the men she is interested in, will not give her the time of the day because they are chasing way, way younger women they can show off.
She was estranged from her daughter for years because she was simply cruel and negligent toward Alex.
She calmed down and made peace with her only child when she finally acknowledged that her daughter was by her side during her federal situation when many abandoned ship.

he was so upset after their divorce that he took out a restraining order forbidding her to talk to him! and then married her assistant who he was cheating with. I would not take his word as the gospel truth.
