The first time we let True off leash he left in a straight line away from us. He reappeared about 10 minutes later and has never left since. I dont know which gods I am indebted to we were at the ocean. You really do learn so much from the fragile ones.
Hmmm
I think that Cesar Milan has great hair, is very charming, loves dogs and understands pressure.
I will say that many TV shows are edited so that no real truth is seen and that turning off the sound and watching a trainer work can give you a better perspective of what they are actually doing rather than what they tell you they are doing.
He is not the cruelest trainer I have seen. But what I see is dogs having their air flow cut off air flow allowed back. I see dogs flooded(pushed way over threshold into the abyss of their fear) into giving up all hope and a lot of learned helplessness-do nothing so you can continue to breath. I think you can love animals and still use horrible cruel methods to train them with. Thats just my perspective.

gooddog, you are seriously my hero... good luck with your PHd, that is amazing. I have to ask your opinion, what do you think of Cesar Millan and his training methods? A lot of corgi people don't like him, and think his methods are archaic. would like to hear your thoughts

polar is great, nothing phases her. dusty grew up on the side of a mountain in tennessee with his breeder and never got socialized. i got him 5 years ago (on Christmas day, in fact), and he's come a long way since then but is incredibly sound sensitive and easily spooked (typical of the breed). i have to think that the lack of socialization at an early age is largely to do with his shyness. the first day we got him, he ran away from us at antietam national battleground in maryland... now I know he was terrified but back then, all I could do was pray and make deals with all kinds of deities. It worked, because he came back and let us "catch" him. I'm still under contract to lesser Indian gods till like, 2056. ;)

to those of you who don't know what antietam is, its a huge battle ground over i don't know how many acres, but if he had jumped the stonewall fence, it would have been all over. it was easily one of the scariest experiences in my life.

now, i know he would run back to me, but back then, he didn't know who we were, and he was absolutely terrified. he's taught me so much, and he's the gentlest soul ever.

I dont have the words for how hard it would be to have a loved one doing that incredibly heroic but dangerous work.
We just finished our fourth and FINAL Christmas celebration and I am sooo looking forward to some down time!! It was interesting b/c we met my DH's step-sister's hubby who is stationed in Iraq so he shared quite a bit with us about how things really are over there. He was in Afghanistan before that. I can't imagine having my DH gone for long stretches and in danger the whole time, especially since they have a two year old. Tough stuff.

dawn, funny you should post this... i actually do want to move to utah and work at dog town... in a really bad way, bad enough that i check their job board periodically. i love watching that show, and I have a huge crush on the trainer, john garcia.

oh, i hope you can do it! of COURSE you can do it!! i have a crush on him too! The first episode i watched was about the Vick dogs and then i was hooked. they do such amazing work there. John was sooooooo amazing with the most difficult dogs and it made me happy and sad all at the same time.

i am not surprised that some people do not think that ceasar milan is a good dog trainer. there are so many different theories out there (similar to human psychology) and I don't think that any one theory is right or wrong. i do like ceasar (so does my husband) and I haven't seen any evidence of him being cruel? I've never seen him restrict airflow? what have i missed?

Congrats, Gooddog!

And can I just say that all I want to do right now is play Super Mario and Zelda - but only the originals. I am now humming both theme songs in my head. My sister, dad and I were OBSESSED back in the day. Used to drive my mom nuts, lol.

i have New Super Mario Bros. for my Nintendo DS and I LOVE it. it's very very similar to the old school Nintento game

Four Christmases?!?!?! wowowowowow, i'm sure you guys are worn out! i was a marine wife (H got out in 2005) and while we were never put through an iraq or afghanistan deployment, many of my friends are going through that now.

Hey! Your ticker's a movin, Dawn! Congrats!! I have to get on track. The holidays have set me even further back and I can't afford to backslide. I need to work on my will power in general. Cookies are yummy and bags are gorgie, but I need to learn to say "no." In fact, I'm paring down to five bags: one brown (my LV), one black (another cheat that gets here Tuesday - if it doesn't work I can send it back and keep looking for a stam hobo), one clutch and two colored bags. I kind of borrowed from Peter to pay Paul and the bag I'm selling tonight will take care of that, but I'll probably let another one go b/c I just don't do well with that many choices and I'd like to have some funds in case something fabulous pops up. I'm bummed b/c I tried to make my new booties work today, just around the house, and they're just too darn small. I LOVE them but they hurt and I just can't do it. And they're sold out of the size I need and I can only return them for store credit, which kinda stinks. If things were moving on the *bay I'd probably just list them, but since I still haven't unloaded my first pair of CLs that didn't fit, I'm not holding my breath on that option.

thanks Dawn! I loved that Vick dogs episode, omg, I wanted to hug them all. I get the Best Friends news letter, and just recently, the first Vick dog passed his CGC!!!! Amazing right? Talk about successful training, just amazing.

actually gooddog is right, I have seen Cesar restrict airflow on some of the toughest cases, he doesn't do it often but he has done it. I distinctly recall one of his toughest cases, where he did do it. I'm not sure which season, and don't remember the dogs name, but it will come to me if I think hard enough.

I use some of Cesar's techniques with my own dogs, mainly to control barking, and putting them in sit/stays before I take them out. I have found that they do work, esp with my nervous sheltie.

PM ain't that the truth. I have baked (and eaten) my way into oblivion, and it has to stop asap. As for bags, I was pretty out of control when I first found this forum, and since then have gotten pretty much everything I wanted (and way more).

DH started flipping, and I don't blame him, because seriously, how many bags can a girl carry at once. Anyway, I have a new technique that I've been trying. DH and I talked it over, and if I really want a bag, I talk to him about it before buying. Not asking permission to buy, so to speak, but talking it through. This has helped me curtail impulse purchases, and he's stopped flipping out. If anything, its brought us closer.

Hey giRlZ!
Sorry for interrupting the doggie talk...
I have a question for you XpeRtZ: Have any of you
seen both Indigo (burgundy stitching and lining) and
Dark Indigo (teal " & ") MJs in person?
Most people seem to prefer the burgundy version,
but I'm kind of changing my mind to wanting the
teal version. What do you thinK?

I have started operation mahina! ;) I am so happy with what I have now! I am at a place where I can be totally picky and just buy what I truly love! I have a feeling your cheat is going to work out perfectly for ya pm! just a gut feeling! sorry to hear bout those cute booties..such a bummer....I hate when that happens. wish I wore teeny tiny shoes cuz i'd take em off your hands! they are gorgy!

karmen, i have only seen the indigo with maroon and it was not in person (from the Ref thread!) ;)
do you have a pic of the dark indigo? it sounds beautiful!
