LV and the quality

I recently had a problem with one of my bags when I used it for the very first time...the SA said to me, "When you're churning out thousands and thousands of bags, you're bound to have some problems." :wtf:
It's very true but I was still surprised she said that to me.

Yes, I was surprised as well when a couple of the SAs admit to the lower quality issue. Not many would admit (or would not be fully aware or they haven't experienced/handled the vintage bags, who knows :shrugs:) But I do appreciate these tidbits from those that are willing to share.

I think that as a prudent consumer, you have to do your research especially when spending lots of money on items that really only cost a fraction of the price to make.

Thanks everyone some really interesting posts. It seems that a few years ago there wasn't so much hype about the brand - or even brands in general. Now we live in a celebrity driven mass produced culture which has increased the brands audience, its such a shame that during this transition Louis Vuitton has lost some of its approach to quality!
*sigh* All we can do is follow Charleston-mom's advice and do research! Luckily I almost prefer vintage pieces so I think I will buy vintage rather than new.

Yeah, definately my large noe and the saumer that I have from over 15 years ago, is made wonderfully and feels heavy-duty. I really believe the monogram material is much thinner from way-back-when, and probably the leather too! Now I am reconsidering selling my Noe;)

I have purchased my first LV items this year. Even now, I am questioning the quality when my Ebene Speedy handles started peeling within the first 12 days of carrying it. I had the handles reglazed and it took 2 months for it to come back. When it came back, I noticed that the glazing at the bottom of the handles are striated. I didn't want to return it to get it reglazed and wait another 2 months.

After that experience, I still purchased a few more LV items, but I am not going to get anymore for a few years (or ever again) just so I can observe how quickly these items wear with time. It is disappointing to see that the quality is not there when I have paid so much for these items.

Not to sound condescending but the Speedy and Neverfull are bags that are on the lower end of the scale, so you get what you pay for I suppose. For most people these are starter or basic pieces. I mean you look at the Suhali pieces, and there's rarely ever any complaints about the quality or anything, so you get what you pay for imo.

^I don't entirely agree with opinion.^ :shrugs:

The Monogram Vernis Patent leather, bags or accessories, can pick up inkstains very easily. The MC silk-screen painted items chip over time. Even the Galleria brass rings stain on the vachetta. I don't think it's the price point that reflects the declining LV quality. IMHO, LV cares less about the quality they put out today than when it was a family-owned business. We just have to choose what LV stuff to get and expect some flaws and hope for the best. Being part of tPF helps to keep us LVers informed.

I am sad  that they could not keep up their quality. I really wish it was not true.

I have even spoken to SAs who have told me the quality limitations of some of their LV items I was contemplating on getting. I wished I purchased some of my LV items years ago to enjoy.

I have stopped buying LV for this very reason- current bag quality has declined. I looked at a Damier Neverfull MM in August as I wanted an everyday tote- I was shocked at how "unfinished" it looked. Where the binding on the top edge met was very sloppy. I felt the bag was pretty cheap looking considering it was >$700. I have to say though that the sp. ed. Steven Sprouse Neverfull is well-made- I have the hot pink and the craftsmanship is top notch. However, the bag was quite a bit more money too.

I have several vintage pieces- 8-10 years old- back when hardware was solid brass and the bags had an "old money" feel to them. I was considering selling some of them but considering current offerings and quality and price, I am not so sure.

This is a great topic. You might want to read Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas- the author addresses this very issue of diminished quality in high-end luxury goods.

^^ Colour transfer is a common issue with patent leather in general, not just LV. Multicoloure is screened on and LV issue a care guide which states that it will occur over time with use. To be honest, I don't think these are issues that are to do with LV's quality. I think some people really do expect these bags to last them a life time, when in reality this may not be the case.

In regards to the Galliera brass staining the leather, can't say I've heard much on this issue so I'd presume it's a minority which this has happened to which again would represent LV have maintained the quality on majority of them but as with anything, there are a few who fall through the net!

Don't sell your vintage pieces! Even though I'm on the hunt for some I think you should hold onto them.

I read that book! I think it is a very good read for all who are serious collectors of premier designer items.

There's also another thread on here about an Italian news station going uncover with "Made in Italy" controversy http://forum.purseblog.com/general-...ly-a-thing-of-past-521035-2.html#post13095520 Such an eye opener. Yes the bags are real but the quality has greatly diminished all in the name of profits.

T-girl, I agree with this forum being such a great source of information. There are so many knowledgeable ladies/gents!

To be honest - the neverful is not one of their more quality bags. I have heard about this over and over again with that particular bag. Fraying edges, breaking straps.

In answer to your question though, yes. Since the takeover when the hands of the company left the family, yes I do feel quality has gone down.

When I started buying LV about 25 years ago, the quality was just unbelievable. It's still good, but not the same. I try to steer away from some of the brand new bags because some of the hardware is really really shoddy. It's definitely not coated brass like it used to be years ago.

It's too bad. But I still love LV and will continue to buy it - I'm just very careful what I buy. I stick with some of the classics, with really nice leather, and steer clear of hardware plates that will discolor and a lot of little "bells and whistles" that I know won't stay nice. For instance, I like the Tivoli PM. But the ones I've seen over a year old, all of the hardware has turned. Yuck. I won't buy it for that reason, which makes me sad, but I know it would drive me nuts. They are definitely trying to cut costs and things have changed. My porte tresor wallet is over 10 years old and still looks brand new. The mono zippy I bought my daughter two years ago already had to have its zipper replaced because it turned silver. So did my Tulum PM - new zipper. You would think with a bag that is well over $1,000 that the zipper wouldn't turn - and that wouldn't have happened 10 years ago. My Babylone bag had gorgeous cowhide lining. The newer ones (before they were discontinued) had cheap lining and the vachetta wasn't nearly as nice either.

I will never sell my older pieces because they are absolutely gorgeous. I often peruse Ebay to look for vintage LV - some of it is just gorgeous.

While I love my mono agenda with the rose interior, I've already replaced the clasp because it turned silverish. My other mono agenda - which is 10 years old (the traditional one), still looks brand new. My older agenda also has better brass hardware on the interior rings than the newer one. So does my really old keyholder. The new keyholders - the brass turns within a few months. Same on my old mono cles. The part that holds the keys is still a pretty gold color. The one I bought my daughter six months ago - already discolored and silverish.

My damier pap is the older style with much nicer, chunkier hardware. The newer ones have a prettier red lining, but the hardware is cheaper.

I think that while LV is trying to appeal to a whole cross section of customers and appeal to people that might not have been able to purchase their product before, they do seem to think that that particular clientele may not notice where they are cutting costs (i.e., the Neverfull I think is a case in point). It's a shame because it's a very practical style. However, the costs to actually make it, versus what they are charging, make it one that I wouldn't purchase. The batignolles horizontal is about the same price point, and has much more sturdy straps, better hardware, and stays beautiful for a long time. The important thing is to really look at what you are purchasing. Don't get caught up in hype and try to really look at the hardware, etc., to figure out whether this is a bag that will last 5-10 years or more. For the price, I like to feel like I'm going to have something a really long time.

Another way to research is to watch ebay ads for old versions of what you are looking at. See how it looks after it's been used a long time. Damier Almas - after 5 years, are still gorgeous. Same thing with most Damier bags, as long as they don't have plates that will tarnish, scratch and turn.

Just do your research. I still love Louis Vuitton.

Wow you just became by very best friend. I think alot of us will value your statements regarding your 25+ years experience with LV. May I ask your opinion on the mono speedy. I do not own one yet and want to get one next month. I am really considering the mon mono. What is your take on the quality of the speedy currently? My first LV was the Galliera and although I love it, I am concerned about the brass plate. I am craving several styles right now but do not want to pay $$$ for a bag that can not hold up as well as my many Coach and D&B, which in my opinion the leather one are excellent.
