Not a secret Vuitton agent, don't worry  just a huge luxury nerd and leathercraft nerd here. And the leathercraft people have a vibrant community online, just as this one. They share tips, tricks, gossip, everything. Just an example: Hermès is very secretive about who they are sourcing the leather from, and also the tanneries are not allowed brag about it on their website. But informally everybody knows.
I believe you to be the leathercraft nerd you claim to be. So, in your opinion, can you help me rate the durability of the different kind of leathers LV has?

Taurillon, Epi, Empreinte, aerogram (is consider as a line of its own?), Vachetta, etc.

Personally I loath Vachetta because I suck at patina process… I don’t want it to be too “white” yet not too brown like aged honey.

Also, I owned an Epi Alma. It may be “hard” and durable for most people, but I actually got a dent on the Epi leather on the “dunes” while lightly using it (most likely I thought too highly of Epi and didn’t care where I crashed and dink when I was using). So personally I also won’t consider Epi very durable too.

My definition of durable is something that can hold my careless usage and still look relatively “new-ish”.

Also, I would like to hear your comments about the new ornamental men series - will the debossing parts be, erm, “dented” if I knock it into something hard? Of cos it’s a guess.
Also I have only seen two “live” videos of the ornamental city keepall in shadow grey on ig. One of them had quite series wrinkles right at the top near the zip.

Thank you for any inputs that you can share.

These are all interesting topics and I would appreciate more infos too.... but I think we should open a new thread to discuss all the leather subjects....?!?! So all members can find these interesting infos and this thread can go back to the original theme - 2023 collections!

Who wants to open a new thread?

 Technically, I want to know if I should get the ornamental city keepall which is 2023 SS men’s line. I’m just not sure how the leather will hold up against my careless bangs…

The live video I saw on IG was this:

It looked beautiful but I don’t know much about debossing leather from LV, the embossing of Empreinte is more familiar for me.

As the video turns the bag around, I can’t help but notice there are quite obvious “wrinkles” near the zip. It’s definitely a newly released bag and the owner couldn’t possibly used it extensively yet (or can she?)

So I want to know if I’m having too high expectations of this material/technique or the lady got a bad piece?

Sorry I don’t quite know how to use the app function and not sure if the ig link came out as an inserted picture or just a link.

@BULL any thoughts about this piece?

Thank you @BULL for your perspective. I have loved Epi bags because they have been very durable for my purposes (lol, my name) and just stopped buying them because I got kinda bored. But the first LV bag that I fell head over heels in love with was the St. Jacques, which I still have in perfect condition (cause I hoarded it and my daughter won’t let me sell). Yes I agree it is clearly a heavily treated leather, which seems obvious and intentional. I would not assume it’s the best available leather not would I assume it’s the worst. For people who buy epi bags it’s not for the quality of the leather but specifically for what has been done to it and how it looks and functions for a bag. And all designer bags cost way more than the sum of the cost of the materials and labor so it will never “make sense” economically. These bags really aren’t for the people that need the cost of goods math to work. So I don’t give it much more thought. Cheers to all and enjoy your Epi bags!

Beautiful bag, but I see the wrinkles too. I think it’s a design thing. LV just needs to figure out where to put the baroque patterns in the leather so that it is not prone to wrinkling.

I saw that bag in store and could touch the leather. It’s very smooth and feels very delicate. And almost a bit artificial if that makes sense. I really like the bag but I would be worried about scratches.
There is one thing I don understand: there is a video where a luggage tag is attached at the front but I can’t see the hole or ring to attach on the front of the bag when I look at the picture. Is there a luggage tag? I can’t remember from the store visit

Thank you. I am not a high priest of this, I just really love it and learnt a lot about it. I hope I can inspire people to do their own research too and learn more about this beautiful topic. I agree with @TomMi39, we should start a new thread about the leathers, it is is much fun :)

The ornaments leather looks like a thin leather, my guess is that they are using vacuum to mold it, and also would guess that the ornaments are padded from the inside (these kinda motifs usually are), so they shouldn't get dented like that.
The finish looks like the rubbery one that they introduced with the Damier Cobalt pieces back in 2014. But I haven't touched them yet.
I loved those wrinkles in the video. Those are just like the pores. That leather behaves like leather. And a thin molded leather will get wrinkly somewhere eventually, it's perfectly OK. Even on their official close up shots, they get quite wrinkly around the motifs.

It certainly looks like a delicate material, but that bag is so so beautiful
