The photos of him wearing a blue vest with the RR of S badge on were from the Braemar Games, so he must've run in front of the late Queen. I did look up the results a while ago, I think I remember he came 12th in the Hill Race, and they are some steep hills!
Thank you! 12th in the hill race is a fine finish! I wonder if Jonny and the other royal equerries are required by their military branches, while seconded to their royal duties, to maintain top physical fitness just as they would if they were still "on duty" with their units in the field. It must be difficult for Jonny to find time to maintain military fitness while he is so busy working with the King!

Indeed, he must spend many hours at a desk, on the phone or a computer organising the King's itinerary. I know BP has a pool the Staff can use, maybe Windsor does too? And ofcourse Balmoral has all the outdoors to walk and run in.

You were right about Jonny running in the Ballater Games! I didn't know there were so many Highland Gatherings!

I've been wondering if Balmoral hosted the 2 Ghilles Balls, as usual, or whether the King cancelled them this Summer out of respect to the Anniversary of the passing of Her Majesty?

In past decades we used to get alot more coverage of Balmoral, and photos of the Royals in our newspapers every August.
Now it's all about that pair of ex Royals in America. Then Commentators have the nerve to say the King and Queen have had a quiet year. They don't cover them all the time!

Yes, that's the picture I was remembering. I did not know he ran in the Braemar games. I imagine he could have run in the Lonach games as well when he was younger but that would mean changing out of Highland marching dress and into running clothes.

Perhaps there is also a gym at BP and Windsor.

I have not seen mention of Ghillies Balls this year in the Court Circular so the King may have cancelled them this year as you mentioned, out of respect to the late Queen.

A new newspaper would be just the thing ... the only topics to be the British Royal Family and all of their events covered with print descriptions and loads of photos.

Sadly not 12th in the hill Race. That year he was 50th out of a field of 93.... But, they decided he was age 26 instead of 36 so I guess he was happy with that! IMG_2811.jpg

I know he ran in the Ballater 10 (the 10 mile road race held a week before the Games) that year as well - you can clearly see the Ballater 10 on his bib in this pic, but I am damned if I can find his results. :annoyed:

There are 4 Highland Gatherings/Games in our area each year - the Aboyne, Lonach, Ballater and Braemar Games - collectively known as the Kindred Games as all our communities are so interlinked and we tend to help out and attend all of them.

There was definitely a Ghillie's Ball this year. The King made sure the staff had the annual knees up!

I can remember when Jonny was OC, hilarious tales doing the rounds of our local jungle drums about the RRS Royal Guard at Victoria Barracks having to learn the reels in the gym instead of doing PE. No women so they had to improvise. It was the OC's task to make sure they were all well prepared. Supposedly Jonny spent several hours pulling his hair out trying to ensure they were all up to the mark. Luckily he is a VERY good dancer.

Thank you for so much new information! 50 out of 93 is still a good finish. In your photo and La Rhumba's photo, most of the runners look near death but Jonny seems to be moving effortlessly along with his typical half-smile.

Oh to have been a fly on the gym wall to peek in on that particular military training! I remember Jonny briefly speaking about it in one of his military interviews ... about the soldiers being full of nerves and not wanting took look the fool at the Ghillies Ball.

Yep, he's a good steady distance runner... built for the long haul rather than the sprints. :giggle:
Well, that is a good thing in case he is ever called upon for that talent while carrying out his Equerry duties!
