I agree, I think Jonny and the King have really similar personalities and common interests, which is why we are seeing more events with just the two of them. I feel that the late Queen Elizabeth, the King and the Princess Royal love(d) their time in Scotland but I do worry about when William becomes King as he has really shown no interest in Scotland. You never see him in a kilt or at a Highland Games at least not as an adult. I don't think he has shown much interest in Wales either. I know he's got kids but he is literally in Scotland and he could bring the kids to the games. I think the King would really like that and so would most Scots I think (I'm Scottish). He is going to get to his coronation and realise that he should have put in the effort.
Now is the perfect time for William to start spending equal amounts of time in Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland and openly embrace those locations and their histories, including wearing kilts and attending Highland games. Even if he is not personally interested, as heir apparent, he still must engage in these important things as a duty and a sign of respect. His children should have the opportunity to know and enjoy Scotland. It would be so nice to see Prince George in a kilt, attending a Highland game with the King and Jonny!

I agree. Seeing the late Queen, and the King and Queen Camilla, along with some of the other older members of the family in our local shops etc., was and is a reasonably commonplace occurrence. But we never seem to see the Wales around in the same way, which is sad.

I’ve wondered if William is not keen on Balmoral, like Diana. Although I suppose it is possible it holds difficult memories for him considering it was here he heard of his mother’s death.

Hopefully he will start to embrace his Scottish side soon! Though I’m not sure if he has the legs for a kilt.

Perhaps not but only the bit between the top of the hose and hem of the kilt would show and no one will pay any mind after the first few "kilt outings"! :giggle:

Isn’t the video wonderful! I have so much to say about it! Yes, there is a tradition of posh accented men in the Forces, usually Guards Officers, who have family heritage in Scotland, Wales or N.Ireland, I'm thinking of Alastair Bruce, Sky News Ceremonial Commentator, former Scots Guard, Pageantry expert, descended from Robert the Bruce, and related to the Royal Family, ancestral home in Knoydart in the Highlands, and currently Governor of Edinburgh Castle. He is also a lovely man, I've chatted to on twitter. Yet speaks with a cut glass English accent. I'm sure if we said to both Alastair and Jonny "Are you English?" They would reply, "Scottish and British ". Jonny loves Rugby, so if he supports the Scottish Rugby team over England, that's definite proof!
As he arrived in the car accompanying the King, he is like a companion to Charles, without Camilla. I would suggest the King attended Lonach for Jonny, as ithis is his home games and where he grew up. Earlier this week a stupid woman tried to tell me nobody in Scotland wears kilts except for weddings, apart from the King and Jonny, and when I asked what about in the Highlands? She replied, it's like her wearing a Morris dancer's outfit to visit England. Such ignorance! It's the same folk who claim the King is not popular. I challenge anyone to watch today's video and still say that. Same with those American Youtubers who say people are hoping Charles will not have a long reign and William can take over. Luckily Charles is not Monarch in America and I doubt William would have received a warmer welcome. Charles & Jonny are a formidable team and both are extremely popular.
Thank you for this. I am pleased His Majesty attended but didn’t realise until I read your post what this day meant to Jonny. He works so hard and diligently for His Majesty perhaps it’s his way to say thank you. They certainly seem to have a rapport and Jonny knows exactly what His Majesty needs. Once again thank you.

A couple of screenshots from yesterday. The first one Jonny thanking them for coming, no doubt he organised this special 200th Anniversary of the Lonach Games himself, including the King's presence.
The 2nd pic how proud Jonny looks as the Lonach Marchers parade past the Royal Box.

What a beautiful day for Jonny. He was so pleased with it all going so well. The King was so friendly and took time when meeting everybody and Jonny was introducing people he obviously knew well and The King was laughing and speaking with them. Thank you for your insight

It was a very special day for Jonny and he definitely suggested it to the King and organised it. Although announced as a surprise guest, the local jungle drums had alerted us all knowing the King would be there. Attending seemed to be a fitting tribute and honour by the King to his ‘right-hand-man’.

It was a joy to see Jonny’s sense of pride and happiness which was almost palpable and particularly memorable as his Dad was one of the marchers. As the march past is about to begin, you can see Jonny returning to the marquee and the King turning to him as though to say, ‘this is it’.

A mark of Jonny’s character that he hasn’t forgotten his roots, and of his deep and abiding love for his family.

He appears to be as beautiful inside as he is out. Very rare in this day and age

I heard the Announcer say "Alan Thompson" and then towards the end of the Parade "Graham Thompson". Maybe his brother was there aswell? And now I'm starting to wonder if the tall lady in a beautiful red tartan skirt with black hair stood next to Jonny watching the Parade is his Mother? She looks like she could be anyway. It's sad his son couldn't be there too, as it's his heritage.
I did notice though on rewatching that the Asian Police Protection Officer with the beard was also there. I suppose it's kind of like a working holiday being up at Balmoral with the King.

ETA: Looking at my screenshot above, the lady in red tartan even clasps her hands in front of her exactly like Jonny does! Like Mother, like son? My imagination is really running away with me now!

:biggrin::biggrin: Your imagination certainly is running away! My apologies, I didn't mean to provoke discussion about his parents, just to share why Jonny seemed particularly happy and proud.

This forum has usually seemed, for the most part, considerate, respectful, well mannered, and... quite clever in putting 2+2 together and correctly getting 5!! So, I felt it was not betraying Jonny's privacy too much to mention his Dad was there. Particularly as I have noticed things discussed here that are not related to Jonny's public duties haven't spread to the mainstream where the vultures are quite voracious in trying to access information that should be private. And again, as I said, this is generally a place that while curious, understands boundaries.

You can speculate all you like, but I can assure you there were a number of 'Thompsons' there that day so I wouldn't put too much store in anything you heard, and his siblings don't live locally. Also the tall lady in the Wallace tartan skirt is definitely not his Mum. But full marks for your attempted sleuthing .

His Mum was there but I sincerely doubt anyone who doesn't know Jonny, or his Mum and Dad, would have any clue who, or where, they were.

As for Jonny's wee man not being there, don't forget school kids in England are no longer on holiday. And Jonny is not having a holiday. It may be time off from a lot of public duties but he still has to work very hard in the background planning to ensure everything runs like a well oiled machine. Still, I agree it is sad that circumstances have meant he has missed a lot of Jonny's doings during his tenure as Equerry. Thankfully Jonny's Mum and Dad will make sure he learns all about it and, as so much has been recorded and part of public record, hopefully as he gets a bit older he will be able to take it all in, understand why his Dad wasn't around quite a bit, and be allowed to have more involvement.

Jonny’s private life should remain private. The photos when Jonny is on duty show just how hard he works and how it all runs smoothly. Perhaps when his tenure as Equerry ends he can return to a more normal military life and spend quality time with his family out of the public eye.
