Low, Medium, or High Settings??

Mine would probably be medium-high. I like to be able to see the culet from the side, but I also require the head to be higher so that every band sits flush next to it.

How do you prefer your rings to be sat? Low, medium, or high?? Why? Does it very from ring to ring?? (ex. your engagement ring high, your right hand ring low??) And the reason why it varies! TIA!

I've liked mine low for so long. DF always says it pokes him sometimes when I forgot to take it off before I sleep. Plus I don't want to skratch any babies or kids. But I really like the look of higher settings. They just catch my eye. So for my engagement ring I opted for a medium setting. At first it looked too high, but you know how it is. At first the diamond looks to big, then it shrinks. I'm kinda thinking my setting is like that. It's looking a bit lower to me know. LOL. But I don't want to go too high. Might start snagging on things. My medium one already shows snagging signs!

However, my right hand rings I tend to like them to be lower because I'm right handed and do so much more stuff with my rand hand. Don't want it banging on anything.

why do you say the diamond "shrinks" over time? I thought they are meant to last forever... sorry for sounding so ignorant but I'm really confused! Thanks!

My ring is set VERY low, but I still feel like I bang it on things all the time!

at first reading this i was like, "bang it"? like you rock it with hella pride, so i was like, "you go girl!! rock that ring! BANG IT!" then i realized.. i think you meant that you bang it on things.. LMAO wow.

Mine is pretty low set... I think DF was worried about me "banging" it on things & wanted to feel secure that I wouldn't knock the diamond loose. It still lets a lot of light in.... it's little, but since it's an ideal cut it sparkles like mad! He picked out the set more or less on his own...and I love it, but honestly my grail setting is the cartier 1895, and mine looks nothing like it....but i'd never tell DF that. ;)

what is the "ideal cut"?

LOL... the shape of my diamond is a round brilliant, but the cut refers to how well proportioned the diamond has been cut into that shape. GIA and AGS and other diamond grading reports assign different grades according to how well proportioned the diamond's cut is. I think GIA's highest is "Excellent" and AGS is "ideal". I think AGS uses a number as well with "0" being the best cut... and also to polish and symmetry of the diamond as well.

The better the cut, symmetry, and polish--the more light return (sparkle/fire/brilliance) from the diamond.

Which is why Cut was my number one consideration when DF went diamond and ring hunting.

I have a low setting....I love it, even though rings won't sit flush.

Gorgeous SULI~!... I love your setting~!

I have a pretty low setting too... but with an upgrade later on (aiming for 5yrs or sooner :graucho:) & the setting I've been eying... I think it sits a lot higher than what I have right now.

But, it's true the higher it sits... the bigger it looks along with how "shrinkage".. happens over time :sweatdrop:

I like mine low, for a variety of reasons.

1) I'm a klutz, so I'll be less likely to snag/bang a lower setting than a higher one.

2) High settings, for whatever reason, look "dated" to me (as opposed to "antique," which I actually love).

3) Low settings are a bit more understated, and I'm a low-maintenance kinda gal so I prefer that.

When we picked my engagement ring setting, it didn't even occur to me to ask to lower the head. I wish it had! My setting isn't high, but it has enough wiggle room that it could've been set a little lower, and I think I'd prefer it to be lower for safety reasons. However, the shank slopes up to the center stone (pic attached to show what I mean), so it doesn't appear as high as it would otherwise--so it doesn't really bother me as much as I know it would if it were a standard solitaire with a head plopped on the band.
