I've seen a lot of similar threads around the forum, but nothing quite answered my question, so here I am posting it.
I want to buy a bag soon and I've been looking at Balenciaga and LV, but I haven't quite decided on a shape for either.
Anyway, my question: How do LV and Balenciaga compare to eachother? Canvas vs leather? What do you think?
Thanks!!
Right now, I'm considering the LV Beaubourg and the Balenciaga Men's Day. One of my biggest considerations is quality and durability of LV canvas and Balenciaga leather. I want my new bag to last as long as possible!!![]()

Still haven't decided. I'm looking at beaubourg or velo now. They're all so amazing!! I'm looking to buy in june when I'll be in NY.
I need help too choosing between LV Empreinte Lumineuse PM or Balenciaga Velo GGH?I would go for LV...I've had a lot of Balenciaga bags and all of them disappointed me in terms of quality of leather, fading issues, etc. I am even slowly selling off all of them. If you want all leather you can for Mahina, Empreinte, etc....they are pricier but will definitely last waaaaay longer than Balenciaga.
What would you choose? LV empreinte lumineuse PM or Balenciaga velo? I worry much if lumineuse will look big on me. Given 2 options, what do you prefer?Comparing LV to Bal is almost like comparing oranges to apples, IMO. You didn't really indicate a particular style/size/color that your looking for so with out that info this is my take on the two brands.
What I love about Bal:
The colors, every season something different(although I didn't like that much for either '10 season) and the different hardware choices the right hardware with the right color can be handbag heaven. I really like all the hardware options, RH, GGH, SGH, RGGH GCH so many to pick from. If you like colors this is the brand for you Bal is all about the colors. I like that they keep coming out with different style bags, even though their bread and butter styles stick around(city, part-time, work). I love the tassels on the regular hardware bags. I like that they have a bit of a edge too them but can can be worn dressed up or down they go great both ways. I also like that they don't scream I'm carrying a $$$$ handbag like LV or any brand that uses their logos on their products. If I'm going to be advertising your brand I should be getting paid for it, not paying them for it. But that's JMO.
Things I don't like about Bal:
The leather varies a lot even with in the same season some bags can be great while others can be dry, it really requires a good SA to find what your looking for. A lot of Bal owners treat their bags before using them to protect the leather and slow down the wear. Depending on the color you choose there could be fading issues. All my Bals are dark colors so this hasn't been a issue for me however it has been a issue on some of the lighter colors, and even some darker colors for example some of the 07 blacks have faded and have a green tinge to them but not all of them have the problem. I also have to add the price, I feel it's too high for what you are getting. I feel like the quality could be better, and they like many other premier designer brands have been increasing their prices and I don't really feel like the price increases are justified IMO. For example they used to use chevre leather and now they use Agneau, when I started buying Bbags I didn't really see what the big difference was even though I've seen it mentioned in the thread before their is a big debate on which one is better. Then I got my first piece of chevre and it was the most fluffiest chewiest (nom nom nom) leather bag ever. I finally understood the difference between the two. I will say that their agneau is getting better it's no where as divine as the chevre, IMO. One of their most popular styles the part time used to have feet and a few years ago the discontinued it. So I feel a bit bothered by the price when I feel like they are doing things to cut costs while they increase the price. They are also playing marketing games too boot. They "discontinued" their GGH(giant gold hardware) to only bring it back as limited editions(ie: only one style of bag in limited colors), not going to lie marketing games like that put me off.
I only have a few LV pieces(all canvas) so here's my take on them.
What I like about LV:
I really like coated canvas, my first coated canvas bag was a coach and I've been hooked ever since. The coated canvas is pretty durable, my LV zippey wallet looks good as new it's my oldest LV piece(3 years old). They have a lot of different styles you can pick from, I tend to lean towards the damier line for handbags but my LV zippey is multi-color monogram. Price point wise it's cheaper than a Bal.
What I don't like about LV:
I've already mentioned it above I'm not a big fan of logos(not going to beat a dead horse with a stick so I'll leave it at that). I as much as I like coated canvas I feel it's over priced for what you are getting. The leather trim on my LV bag is the only part that actually shows wear, it got dirty fast. If I knew that would happen I would have treated it before I used it and I'm normally not one to treat leather because I like aged leather, but I have the damier azur and while the canvas looks great the leather trim looks dirty it really sticks out. Maybe if I got the ebene it probably wouldn't really be a problem it would look it's supposed to be that color since it's darker. Another thing that bugs me about LV is their are so many fakes out there, I see fake LV's EVERY day, I've only seen one fake Bal IRL. I'm not a fan of fakes and I don't really want to get into a discussion on fakes, this is JMO.
With all of that being said. If this is your first premier handbag or your only premier bag for a while I'd probably lean towards LV over Bal. Price point it's easier on the pocket book than Bal. Coated canvas is pretty durable and their styles are classic and you will get a lot of use out of them for years to come. If you choose Bal and this is your first premier handbag I'd say go for a classic color like black or anthra. Also I don't know if you are looking to get a new or used. But if you go the used route their are some really good suggestions on reputable resellers on both the Bal & LV forums and always get it authenticated here first if your buying from ebay or bonanza. They guys and girls who authenticate the handbags are angels!
