I've given a lot of thought to the OP's concerns over the past couple of years...mostly because I found myself loving the quality of Vuitton canvas and vachetta leather but not being a fan of monogrammed patterns on ANY brand - it seemed like blatant conspicuous consumption in the tackiest of ways. Vuitton seemed particularly bad with this (like the Starbucks of luxury brands in terms of ubiquity!), but ultimately, I did wind up buying a NF GM (in monogram, no less!), as well as 4 other DA/DE/monogrammed bags after that - all with zero regrets. Here's why:
- Yes, many people buy Vuitton to be flashy and "show off", but many people (such as us TPF nerds

) buy it because we appreciate the history of the brand, and the quality of the materials and craftsmanship. Why should I deprive myself of this just because I'm worried about what someone else thinks?
- Though I'm still not a fan of monogram print, I love vachetta leather that patinas over time (and I'm not so crazy about the DA print for my workhorse bag), so mono was my only option
- Like someone mentioned earlier, mono is actually quite a neutral pattern so it seems actually quite subtle now (especially since metallic and/or embellished bags are so in right now!)
- Damier is my fave (if only those handles weren't glossed, I would have bought my NF in DE!) - way more classy and subtle, no "LV! LV! LV! LV!" in your face
- I've come to realize that the "flashiness" that strikes me as tacky isn't about the product itself so much as how it's worn/displayed. The people who make a big show about using their luxury goods when they're out and about, take photos showing off all their wares (TPF not included; I mean on Facebook, etc. etc. as if they're a Kardashian!), make you walk around it with 4 feet of room around it, treat it like it's a newborn child in public...I mean, you do you if that's your thing, but that's not for me. Most NF users use it as their workhorse bag - it's been everything from my day bag to my beach bag to my 3-nights-in-Vegas carry-on bag! I wear it with minimal "preciousness", can put it on the ground or under my seat on an airplane without worrying about scratches or dirt since it's so easy to clean. Hardly "flashy", just a strong belief in its hardiness and durability (and so far, so good!).
So enjoy your bag, especially since Damier is so much more subtle than Mono. Who cares if everyone has it. It's not what you wear, it's how you wear it.
