I lost my diamond engagement ring. It went missing for almost two months and finally settled a replacement value with my insurance company. With the money, I don't necessarily have to get another diamond ring. In fact, DH and I are ready to upgrade anyway. Here are a few choices:

1) get another diamond ring but upgrade to a bigger carat, not compromising cut, clarity, and color. Just so you know, I don't usually wear my engagement ring anyway.

2) get a ruby with diamond halos. This was my first choice when we got engaged but my family was against us for not getting the traditional stone. Ruby is my favorite stone, btw. :D

3) get a Birkin with exotic skin, though the waiting list would be around 4 years if I'm lucky. DH is against this option, but it's really up to me. :p

4) buy GOLD through a brokerage firm. I can make money. I watch the stock market daily anyway and it's been a rollercoaster ride.

Hey Sophie, It was between the "get my favorite stone" and the "Birkin". Since you never wear your engagement ring no need replacing it. Also, buying gold at this time is a bit stressful and risky.

I decided to go with the "favorite stone" because it will always hold a high degree of sentimental value and sounds stunning. I don't think a Birkin, in the long run, would hold the same degree of sentimental memories down the long road.

You really don't think so? It would be my very first Birkin and the one and only that DH would buy for me.

What about buying physical gold coins?

If I was going to get my first Birkin, I would not likely go with an order for an exotic. I would get a classic in nice leather.

If that's not ruled out entirely, I'd get a classic leather Birkin and the Ruby Ring.

Hmmmmm.......maybe, but the ruby with the diamond is close to an exotic skin birkin so I can't get both.

Sophie, I am so sorry to hear you lost your ring. I would be devastated. Sounds like you really didn't wear it much though. Is that right? If that is the case, I would get the ruby ring or the Birkin. If you got the ruby ring, would you wear it a lot. Which would you use more, the ruby ring or the Birkin? I wouldn't get the larger e-ring if it isn't going to be worn that much. Would get whichever item would get the most use. I think the ruby ring or Birkin. I am a jewelry and purse addict, so either one would make me happy :)

I still think the ring. I mean a Birkin would be wonderful to own, and a generous present from your hubby, but the ring, in my opinion would mean more, and would bring back past and future memories.

Physical gold coins, although hopefully a nice money cushion is just not as meaningful to me since they will probably be placed in your safe (or a safe place).

I'd go with the ruby because that's what you've always wanted.

I personally would want something tangible to wear daily as a replacement as opposed to a bag or an investment like gold.

Hi S, I'm actually very sad about losing my engagement ring. It was something both DH and I picked ourselves and I loved everything about it from the cut, color and clarity. I haven't used it because I've been wearing emeralds and pink sapphires rings. DH wanted to get an upgrade since 2 years ago for our 15th anniversary and then this happened. But I don't know, it's hard to replace a 'first' diamond that DH proposed to me with. Even the upgrade doesn't feel right because the first should be the only. So when this happened, I was given a choice. Which one would I use more bet. the ruby and the Birkin? Probably both. :p I think both will make me happy.....actually, I have a hard time deciding. DH leans towards diamond because he is a traditional man. I'm non-traditional. :p In fact, if he proposed to me with a birkin 15 years ago, I would had said YES! :D

You're right, the gold coins would be in the safe......but hopefully, with the way gold is hiking up, can convert to a dream gem one day. I don't know. The gold was my DH's idea to make up for the slumping stock portfolio.
