Looking for advice on selling jewelry.....

What about Ann's fabulous (or is it fine?) finds? AFF...whatever that stands for!
:smile1:

I have some old Tiffany silver jewelry from my ex-boyfriend. DH has bought me so many nice pieces that I have no desire to wear my jewelry from my ex. Where should I try to sell my Tiffany silver jewelry? All of the pieces have been worn, but I still have the bags/boxes.

I don't know where you are based but I sell a lot of things on Preloved (www.preloved.co.uk) and have had queries from the US and some other countries. It is commission-free and registration is also free. I just sold a load of solid silver jewellery last week which I don't wear anymore since I got married, so I'm sure you would sell Tiffany silver on there very easily. I'm not sure if you can open an account with them if you are not in the UK but it might be worth a try. DH sells lots of stuff on Ebay but I avoid it for the same reason as you, plus the fees on there are ridiculous.

Yoogis Closet also looks good - I've never sold anything on there so don't know what commission they take, but have heard good things about them from other people on TPF.

I guess I'll try Ann's Fabulous Finds, but it seems like they take a huge cut (40%).

How much are you actually expecting to make off these sales?

Tiffany silver has a huge markup, especially on silver. Yoogis doesn't touch it because it is such a low-profit item for them anyways.

There is a lot of fakes of the most popular styles, so people won't trust the average seller. Stores like AFF can get higher prices because they are trusted - but still, I wouldn't expect to actually get a lot.

I think my experience is fairly typical selling silver jewelry experience:
I brought a Tiffany silver Peretti necklace, a jeweler-created silver necklace and a pair of DY shrimp earrings to my local consignment shop. The necklace was originally $225, the jewelry necklace was originally $175, and the earrings were originally $725.
They priced the Tiffany necklace at $79, the jeweler necklace at $17.50, and the earrings at $345. After three weeks, the DY earrings sold, and I received half, or $178. The jeweler necklace sold, and I received $9. After a month and a half, the necklace was marked down 20%, and after almost two months, it sold for $64 - and I received $32.

In other words, I consigned $1125 worth of jewelry. I received $219 after everything sold. (I then used that money and purchased a lovely Mikimoto pearl strand with my store credit + $40 - so I felt good about the sales - but the person selling the pearls received $130 for their $2000 necklace...)

I know that there are a lot of eBay horror stories on here, but there's also a lot of good info for safeguarding yourself against bad situations. I think if you want to make a reasonable amount of money on these items, eBay is really the route to go. Lots of buyers on there for designer jewelry, especially Tiffany. eBay + PayPal fees are around 15%, so you get to keep most of the money. You can look at completed listings to figure what your items might typically sell for, and decide if the risk is worth it.
40% commission at AFF isn't that bad, either. I know that Buffalo Exchange will take designer jewelry, but they'll only give you 33% of the retail value.

I've sold a lot of things through Ann's, she has a sliding scale, so depending on how much your items sell for, it may be less than 40%. Here in NYC, the consigners take 50%, so I just send everything to her.

Ann's doesn't take anything that has resale value <$250. I emailed them and got the response yesterday. The items that I want to sell RETAIL for $125-200, so resale value would be much less. I really just want to sell old Tiffany silver jewelry from my ex-boyfriend. My husband and family have bought me so many nice pieces over the years (Tiffany, DY, local jeweler) that I haven't worn the pieces from my ex-boyfriend in >10 years. I hate hanging onto this stuff and it would be nice to get some money for them. I'll try calling Buffalo Exchange this weekend and may consider eBay. I still have bags and boxes for the items, which should help.

I just hate hanging onto stuff that I don't use and I'm trying to do a big closet organization right now. Also, I could use the money from anything that I sell to buy things that I would actually use.

Hey girls. Wondering what everyone here does with jewlery that you dont want or use anymore. I have a broken gold necklace and some gold rings with diamonds that i never wear... Has anyone used those "gold guys" type places? Feels a bit weird to me. I was thinkin of using *bay or something.

If you are in the la area, lemme know of any specific places you know of too. Thanks!

Definitely don't use those "gold guy" type places! I tried one a few years ago and I sent them around $3500 of jewelry, every piece I sent, I packaged individually just like I stored it. Well they offered me $187 for all of it. I told them NO and to send it all back to me. When I got it they sent it back all together in little plastic bags and the jewelry scratched each other. I was so upset. Anyway, I decided to sell some of it on ebay and some to a local jewelry store and I received quite a bit more doing it that way.

Omg thats horrible. Sorry that happened to you but i will definetly avoid those places. I will check out my local jewelry place though. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks, it was a lessoned learned. Definitely check out smaller jewelry stores or at least ones that aren't chain stores. You can expect to get about 1/3 of what you paid for, for the jewelry you want to sell. Good luck! I know it can be frustrating trying to get a fair price, but I'm sure you'll find someone who is willing to pay what is acceptable to you.
