I'm sorry about what happened to you OP but glad you're safe!
I live between Paris and London and I have to say that I feel MUCH more safe in London than Paris even though in any case I try to never go to "dangerous" places alone and if I don't have the choice I try not to "advertise" my possessions (if I really feel unsafe I try to wear my coat over my bag that way it looks like I'm not carrying anything with me)
