The thing to keep in mind is that many people are trying for appointments. I know it must be discouraging to apply and not get one, but let's not romanticize waiting in line now, because that was no guarantee of getting an appointment either.
People were getting there at 5 am and standing in line for 5 hours and still getting turned away because all appointments had been filled by the time they were able to fight their way to the hostess. Even those who got up at 3 am. and waited for 7 hours and were lucky enough to get appointments, would then have to hover nearby all day and still no guarantee of a bag.
At least this system is respectful of the one thing none of us can recover, and that is our time. One can sit at one's computer in pajamas and make the request. As always, there are no guarantees, but at least it is more civilized and elegant. They no doubt have bugs to work out, but I think it is a step in the right direction.
