Lab grown Diamonds - Thoughts?

What about the human cost?
As far as I know, lab diamonds factories do not employ children nor slave workers.
Besides the price, this is huge for me.:flowers:

You are very likely right! But again, it’s interesting and useful to see the arguments and counter arguments in favour of or against both. It seems to be a fallacy that lab diamonds are actually ‘the’ eco friendly and sustainable choice. Maybe a ‘better’ choice from that point of view, but not without its darker underbelly.

Also, what other goods (thinking designer bags and shoes in particular, beloved of many on this forum including me) have questionable origins in terms of how they are made/sourced?

It’s been years since I last posted here but thought it would be fun to revisit as De Beers cut their diamond price by 10 to even 25% earlier this year. Demand for lab grown diamonds certainly is a contributor.

Yep, the younger generation does not give a rats azz about the two months salary and all that jazz.
Also when the boomer gen finally meet their creators, the market is going to be flooded with goods imo.
So there will be another price correction.

Big yes for me. Exactly the same composition, with lower pricing, to me sounds like manufacturing innovation. There will always be diamond enthusiasts or purists out there who want the original thing and I can definitely appreciate that, like how some people won't buy cultured pearls or gold below 18K. I actually don't buy cultured pearls myself so I get it. But for me I'd be very happy with lab diamonds. :)

I mean but you don’t ingest the diamonds🤷🏽‍♀️😂
Lol. Of course, yet price would be a bit heavy to digest considering being lab grown and the not-so-light carbon footprint to make them. Will they keep their valuer in the future? Hopefully yes

Frankly, the value of the mined diamonds for a consumer is not that great. So, mathematically, buying cheaper at the onset is a win all around.
As far as the not so light carbon footprint, how about it? Diamonds mined or manufactured are not a necessity for survival, so how about eliminating both industries all together?
There, solved.

I was interested in lab grown but not anymore because of how much treatment goes into most of them. At that point its not really a diamond to me and it would be better to get a moissanite. Also its not much better for the environment, better to buy antique jewelry if the concern is about the environment IMO.

I was a big fan of lab diamonds back at the beginning of this thread in 2020 and I still am- even more so now. Having done even more research and watching how the entrenched diamond industry and jewelry industry has reacted to lab diamonds has really opened my eyes.

It’s the age old push pull of retail consumer business. The consumer wants the best product for the lowest price, and the retailer wants to sell the cheapest product for the highest price. What does a retailer do? Convince the consumer that the highest price product is better, and is what they actually want. Marketing!!

I can spend $2500 on a 2 carat nice quality lab stone or I can get a sub 1ct low grade drill bit dodger for my $2500.

I figure I’m better off spending less money up front on a lab diamond and knowing exactly what I’m getting, than spending lots on a natural and having a big unknown in terms of origin and resale value.

My advice is- if you like lab diamonds, buy them now. Prices are low, and if there is no resale value, no harm done and you still have nice jewelry.

Buying vintage diamonds and jewelry is always the best option. Millions and millions of carats of diamonds already exist!

Natural diamonds always. Lab grown diamonds are like lab-grown beef for me, so it's a big no;)
I found this article which I find helpful if deciding to buy a lab diamond vs natural diamond: https://earth911.com/style/the-environmental-impact-of-lab-grown-diamonds/
Unless you are an avid hunter and kill your own wild found animals (kind of like mining a diamond? But without the living creature thing… ) or a vegan, you eat factory farmed meat so maybe kind of not great comparisons all the way around? 😂😂

The arguments for and against lab diamonds have players with deeply entrenched agendas and even deeper pockets so it’s incredibly difficult to find any unbiased information. Take everything you read on both sides with a very large grain of salt.

Diamonds and jewelry in general have very poor resale value. That argument needs to be flushed. Both lab and natural have environmental effects. That argument needs to be flushed.

If one doesn’t mind being heavily manipulated by a corporate mafia guilty of a century of human rights abuses, then by all means- buy natural.

and when buying a new diamond ring it's quite likely the diamond isn't "new" I think
