Just Curious - is Epi Leather not as popular as Canvas?

LV makes many more styles in canvas so it is more popular. I have both and prefer Epi for more formal attire. I think of canvas as my everyday bag but get tired of the canvas print and find myself using Epi Speedy more and more.

Slightly OT, but has your Epi Speedy softened at all with use? I like how understated Epi is, and it takes colors beautifully, but sometimes I just can’t get over how stiff it is.

I love Epi and have a few SLGs, but there are fewer Epi bag styles that "ring my bell" compared to other materials. I'd pounce SO hard on a regular-size Epi Pochette Metis, for example.

Not sure anyone has said this but have you seen the runway/limited Denim Epi PM or the Black & White Floral Epi/Embossed PM? Both of those are regular size but of course...limited.

most people use relaxed style bags as everyday bag, canvas is usually more relax and can stretch while epi is more stiff? for example neverfull, most ppl will go with canvas as everyday bag, its soft n comfortable, epi neverfull usually described as great work bag. but I think epi looks very nice in those structured bags like alma. if I want an Alma one day, I guess it would be in epi.

I agree to what have been said above:

1) Not so many people recognize epi, which lowers resale. (It is always like this when a brand is most known for certain materials/detalis/etc).
2) Canvas is lighter

And I also want to add:
3) Epi normally doesn't wear too well. Ceases look really bad, in my opinion. So not many models are great for epi. Canvas wear better.
Thanks for your reply.

Interesting about Epi leather not wearing leather well. I bought an Epi piece I am second guessing for a number of reason but one of the reasons I bought it was I thought it may be more durable, carefree vs a monogram piece.

I love epi leather! Yes there is a risk of creases in the bag, but Empreinte leather has it's risk as well with embossing issues, and some monogram bags with glazing issues. It's a matter of deciding which you prefer the most and if you're willing to accept. the associated risk.
I own the following Epi's and will buy other pieces (stateside) when I find something I like.
  • Epi Alma (Blue)
  • Segur Pochette (Noir)
  • Petit Noe (Noir)
  • Monceau (Noir)
  • Pochette Accessorie MM (Noir)
  • Dauphine (Noir)
I also purchased a multi color Petit Noe for DD.

I use Meguiars Cleaner/Conditioner and Cadillac Leather Lotion on my bags and they look stunning after pampered spa treatments.
So do you feel your Epi Alma is low maintenance? I am definitely not hard on handbags at all but would like one I do not have to worry about winter weather issues and rain. I love the look of the canvas pieces too but I guess I have always thought leather = better. :-)

I have bought and sold MANY epi leather LV bags. You can find amazing vintage models in many great unique colors. So they can be more original and exciting than the standard monogram. Epi bags were popular 3 years ago, then were really cheap a year or two ago, and are now gaining popularity back again. When you buy a vintage model, make sure to look at the corners closely (make sure they are not "rubbed" away), this is where you will find most issues regarding wear. The epi leather models are much more expensive than their canvas counterparts, when purchased new at retail.

Thanks for your advice etc! I have seen many pretty colors on Yoogis and Fashionphile and pretty good prices. So by cheap and now gaining popularity I assume you mean on the pre-owned market? Oh and yes, at retail so much more. That's another reason I am questioning my purchase. I could essentially get two canvas handbags for the price of one Epi. So do you have a nice collection of Epi now?

Congrats on your Epi purchase ! Which piece did you buy ? Dont second guess your self ! lol . I have an Epi Electric Alma bb and love it . It has held up so well . I do not baby that bag at all . It literally looks brand new . Not a scratch on it . . I just think leather bags always look more lux than canvas . Canvas these days are losing my attention .
Enjoy your new purchase !

Yes, second hand. Oh my gosh, I always have a few in the collection. The alma and speedy 30 epis in black or red are classic and stunning in person. And you can get them in great preowned condition for $700 or $800 (as opposed to buying the new model from LV). I also have a petite noe in blue. I have also aways liked the "kenyan fawn" color, which is a light brown. And I have a Keepall 50 in black, great luggage (also popular with men).

My Petit Noe is only stiff/rigid at the bottom, the body of the bag is soft and pliable.

My Alma and Monceau Epi are VERY stiff. I'm not very fond of the Alma in Epi - but the color makes it a keeper. One of the design features of the Monceau is that it's structured and she is elegant in Epi!
My Segur is my little black bag for occasions when I wear the little black dress attire, but she isn't stiff at all.

.

For me, Epi is extremely low maintenance. If something spills on it a damp towel is all that's needed. I don't have to worry about water, snow, etc. damaging the bag., My Petit Noe is my winter workhorse bag and she stands up to the challenge wonderfully. Also, when I wear it regularly, I use a Meguiar's wipe, at least every 2 weeks, to keep her clean and attractive
