Personally I love that heritage leather develops a patina, gets darker & a kind of glow on the parts that you touch, rub & wear.
I feel the same. Vintage H bags in their heritage leathers are stunning to me for that reason. I’ve gotten very into the quality of the raw materials at this point in my handbag journey. There‘s really nothing like the smell and the feel of beautiful, full-grain leather, is there?

The Fontélie reminds me of a simple school bag in many ways. I bet it's a great everyday bag (as others have said)

Like the Hermes GP or Evelyne, which were initially some of least favourite bag from Herms, it's also the kind of bag I'm not so keen on until I try because they make some irresistible colour/variation, buy, use it, and then can't take it off. I'm all about practical bags I can use on the daily, as much as the exquisite bags that love command attention from inside their dust-bags, on the top of my piano.

Now that I see more views it seems like an evolution of a mashup of the Gaby and Danse. The Gaby’s refinement and structure, the Danse’s more casual handle setup and bottom.

I’m not sure how I feel about the non-detachable strap. I never carried my Danse without it, but that was before I built up a strap collection. It would be nice to have the option, but I’m also guessing that the way he designed it makes the bag hang in a certain way without the variability of hardware.

I will definitely try this one on next time.

Me too. My Diane messenger has a few “spots” from my furbaby sneezing on it, but they have softened into the patina and I am guessing will eventually disappear.

I asked the store manager when I was in Paris and she said it's not barenia, and didn't come from Tanneries Haas. She said it came from a small tannery. There are several tanneries in Alsace, not just Haas. Gustave, Degermann, Sovos, to name a few. Perhaps Alsace is a region for tanneries.

also it would be so embarrassing for JD to source their leather from Haas. they already manufactured their "heritage know-how" re: handbags (there was none before Ramesh was onboarded) and the only truthful thing about Joseph Duclos is that he owned tanneries and was an expert in tanning that he was given recognition by Louis XV.
You’re 100% spot-on about Ramesh creating the first bag. I was surprised to read the fine print on JD’s IG GQ story. GQ got it wrong in their article. I screenshot and magnified the blooper.

I had a similar conversation as well (my earlier comment about Barenia was in regards to the method, not the brand name, apologies for not being more specific).

Back when Ramesh was at Moynat I met the person who was in charge of the relationship with their tannery and he walked me through the whole "barenia" process. They never officially called it that in print, but in conversation with SA's in the US it was always referred to as Barenia.

I shared this with the JD SA (who I knew previously from Moynat's Paris maison) and he and his colleague were really taken aback by that. I got the impression that Ramesh and the French management would not be pleased had they known, and that no one at JD is going to utter the word Barenia.

With regard to the new bag leather - "Concerto" - the description sounds very much like the Gaby "Taurillon Blush" leather, which I always thought was similar to Togo (except for the veining used horizontally). The more I look at pictures of the new bag the more I like it. It seems to address all of the nits I had about the Gaby and Danse and it is growing on me as an elegant casual bag (which sounds like a contradiction but isn't really).

Sigh.

Extremely impressed with the craftsmanship. The Diane clasp is surprisingly easy to use.. kinda satisfying to unlock/lock it lol. I think the next few bags I purchase will be from JD:love: between the product quality and customer service they’re wonderful.

I know people find the Diane style to be formal looking but the black/PHW gives me vampire-gothic vibes:biggrin: My style is casual and so far the bag is working well for me.

My Diane L20 noir in different lighting. Did I mention how much I love this leather!?:hbeat:

The leather knowledge here on the forum is just incredible.. I can never keep up:blush: do you know if JD heritage leather can handle light rain like Hermes Barenia?

Fantastic! Love the "vampire gothic" comparison.

Enjoy! These bags are so satisfying to handle and carry. Or just look at.

yes. it says so on their page, although the guidance applies to all of their bags:

If your bag has been sprayed with rain, wipe it using a soft cloth,
