Here's my situation. We used to have Chubb insurance, but we cancelled it for some reason (neither one of us can remember why). Well, my husband's job as brought us to Europe for 8 months out of the year each year. I need to insure my wedding set and I don't know where to even begin to look- and it is especially hard because I am under the impression that you need to have a homeowners/renters policy in order to insure the rings (maybe I'm wrong?) which wouldn't apply to us because we live outside of the country for the majority of the year in a house that is paid for by my husband's job, and during the summer we just rent vacation homes wherever we feel like being for the summer- changes each year. Please help- Anyone know of a good insurance company to call?

Jeweler's Mutual should work. Its a stand alone policy for jewerly only. You can get a quote online via their website. Probably need a USA home address though... (maybe a relative?)

I have a stand alone chubb policy and I found their international and travel coverage to be the best. In the event you do need a replacement, you get the cash to choose whereas I think most others require approval through a jeweler. I'm not sure how that would work international. I would contact your old agent and see what they can do.

Hello all,

Just got a quote from my Home Owners insurance company (Allstate,) and the insurance for my engagement ring seems crazy!

I'm just wondering what the typical cost is per year for people who have had theirs insured. I am looking at a 3% rate which seems really unusual and against the bulk of information I've read about online :confused1:

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What are the terms of the policy? Like replacement or payout or what? And what's the value it's insured at? Replacement value or appraised or retail or what?

I am with Chubb and Mine is about I think 2-3% value, but it's cash out. I also live in St. Louis, which besides being one of the most murderous cities on earth, has apparently a lower overall theft rate for this stuff. Mine still got stolen but that's not really a factor as much as say in NYC it would be.

I'm paying 1.5% with Jeweler's Mutual in Boston region on a very pricey piece. Liberty Mutual wanted 3.5%, and MetLife wanted 2.25%, I think (might have been the other way around). Good luck.

Just wondering b/c I'm so behind in this and now that I have a few new pieces :) I have to get on it!!

My philosophy has been to insure all the "bigger" ones as in anything over say $8,000 ... does that make sense? Or am I nuts? I don't want to go crazy - we do have a safe, an alarm and a dog and nothing other than my e-ring is worth over $16K...

I believe our home insurance covers up to $7K worth of jewellery (I wonder if that's per person though or total?? hmmm...) so that should cover some of the "fun" but real gold (like Jennifer Meyer, Sydney Evan stuff...) ...

I'm torn about doing things in the middle though like VCA bracelets at $3500... it's going to be a big bill if I include EVERYTHING!

surfergirl I just had the same dilema. My Canadian policy is for 6000 total which is peanuts and I have argued that with my insurance rep. I insure my more expensive items with add on's to the policy which is now about 300.00 extra a year. My rep says you don't want to go to crazy and I agree but I don't want to be out wearing my love bracelet, my wedding set, and maybe a vca necklace and someone hit the jackpot only for me to get screwed out of insurance money. I also have a safe, alarm and big dog but everytime I get a new something sparkly I feel uneasy if I don't add it on to the policy.

I only have my yellow diamond ring, 1.5 ctw diamond studs, st onge pendant insured everything else isn't insured; basically if it is over 3k I will insure it.

I haven't added my VCA YG 5 motif to insurance i'm hesitating because it's a thick chain and I doubt I will lose it...but I don't know I probably should??

all my other pieces are not insured.

I have 2 cats, not very good for security but one does look like a sumo wrestler :D lol

I have insured my big pieces, diamond studs, ring and pear pendant, those I would not be able to replace, it is expensive, but totally worth it, they will be replaced even if I loose them. The rest I have a house insurance for 20'000.- $ so that is ok and they are well hidden in case of burglary

We insure anything over $7000. Not sure how we came up with that number though. So basically my rings and a few watches. Insurance is so high! And it's so easy to get dropped after a claim, we really hesitate to file anything.

You'd be surprised how easily they can find things you think are well hidden!
