Social media in California is advertising minimalistic jewelry + the layering trend of layering multiple dainty necklaces or wearing multiple dainty rings on one's hands.
A lot of people are still into their yellow gold or their rose/pink gold, but that's been popular for a while now.

However, what I see people wear in reality is whatever they want to wear haha.

And to be honest, in my area, many people are not wearing too much jewelry in general because of:
- theft concerns
- wearing gloves when going out grocery shopping, etc.
- constant hand washing and/or hand sanitizer use

also, taking masks off and on can cause loss of earrings

How about two trends that already feel old, at least to me. (1) Stacking, stacking, stacking. Stacking rings, stacking bracelets, stacking necklaces. Especially dainty ones. If I see the cliche' "neck-mess" used one more time on IG or a designer website, I'm going to lose it. (2) Piling multiple medallions/amulets onto a chunky chain. Foundrae led the way starting back around 2015-2016 when worn by Gwyneth Paltrow and Michelle Ob*m*. Many designers have glommed onto these two trends with their own versions the past few years. David Yurman even has a "Build Your Own Amulet Necklace" finder on its website now. While jewelry consumers can look perfectly nice wearing these trends (and I often wear more than one bracelet at a time myself) the looks are feeling overexposed in my opinion. Time for something new in the jewelry world. (Or maybe just more individuality. But then it wouldn't be a trend lol.)

I haven't been wearing my diamond studs since I almost lost one....found it in my bra but thought for sure it was gone

Nearly lost the diamond studs my mother gave to me as an engagement gift, from taking off a mask, haven't really worn them since. :-s

I have a pair of diamond studs from Costco, and the clasps are super tight on the posts. There are also 2 notches in the post that the backing clicks into place. I click into the notch that is the closest to my ear lobe, if it ever gets pulled out of the first notch, it'll slide into the 2nd notch further down the post. It's actually so tight that it's a little difficult to take on and off, but those are the only pair of diamond earrings I feel safe wearing a mask lol.:P

I find that, with Covid, necklaces are the pieces that feel safest to wear. I’ve been wearing necklaces more than in the past, and it’s made me want to stack more! But I’m starting to see chunkier pieces instead of multiple fine necklaces

Depends what circles you’re in…Around me I see a lot of family heirlooms and dainty pieces but in another area there’ll be lots of furs and Loves and diamonds and chunky watches (Rolex), stacked and flashing at you…Generally speaking in the UK I see a lot of individualism when it comes to jewellery, no trends as such? (I might be wrong)

Jewellery trends tend to be longterm unlike fashion trends that tend to be seasonal.

I agree with @Cosmopolitan I think the stacking is overplayed, but I think stacking will stay but what is stacked will change.

I see more hotchpotch, random, and edgier stacks coming, edgy freshwater and baroque pearls are everywhere (@880 has the edgiest) and non-stacking statement bolder boulders. More unisex jewellery. I think we'll be moving away from rg too.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but as a quick sidebar I changed my earring backs to the “Chrysmela catch“ style and my diamond studs have *never* come off during the recurring strap action from masking/unmasking -- not sponsored or affiliated in any way but these backs have allowed me to wear my studs without anxiety and they are relatively inexpensive for that peace of mind. I just wanted to mention them in case it is helpful to anyone!

As for trends, I agree with @papertiger that rose gold seems to be on the decline, especially the strongly pink-hued alloys, but I think the more subtle 18k pink gold alloys (e.g. Clash de Cartier) will have more longevity. Also, I’ve been noticing more interest in non-round diamonds (e.g. oval, pear) and colored gems.

True! It depends on your circle. My friends (40+) wear a lot of delicate pavé pieces. I see the younger girls and the more fashionable 40+ wearing chunkier pieces.
I live in a conservative country fashion wise and most women my age only have one peircing per ear (as do I). Younger women have several. THE earrings to have for the 40+ are diamond cluster earrings. I don't know why, but 90% of the moms in my daughters' school wear them. I enjoy looking at other people's jewelry, so I find that boring. But I've been wearing boring earrings too :P. I blame it on fashion.
One of the moms at my daughters' school is a jeweler, and she sells a lot of colored gemstones and the pavé pieces I mentioned. Her pieces are very pretty.
And I see everyone wearing smartwatches.
